Is jumping a painful method

Hello,
I was wondering whether someone has the real expertise to explain to me if you feel that much pain on impact. I am forced to choose that method so I was wondering whether it's advisable to take fentanyl before jumping. I don't have fentanyl and I can't imagine a doctor will prescribe it to me. I don't think it's safe to order it illegaly nowadays.

There is a jumping survivor guy described the whole process. It basically says his/her brain shutting down before even hitting the ground, because the brain knows you are gonna suffer a huge amount of pain. Sorry I can't find that thread anymore.

This is my experience of falling from height in an accident, it was only maybe 3m onto concrete - head took impact. No pain or recollection of fall, minimal pain upon gaining consciousness as I presume shock as you say & adrenaline take over after such an event. I actually then got up of my own volition (it was a remote place and late at night so nobody saw it) and then slept in my home totally oblivious to the injuries I had sustained. The pain next day was however unreal as I'd suffered bad fractures to spinal area & my head so I then spent a month in hospital awaiting surgery to stabilise my spine which co-incidentally is why I am passively suicidal now as the long term neuropathic pain from where they placed screws and metalwork in me is sickening. The docs at the time told me I was lucky to survive etc which is rubbish, there is no luck in surviving in pain like this so if anybody plans to jump from height then make sure your high enough and kudos as it takes a lot of courage.

I came across a story at the weekend of a woman in London who, when getting off a train over a year ago, slipped on a puddle and fell between the platform and the train. She was trapped there for 15 mins. She ended up losing an arm and a leg; the train she had gotten off crushed her arm when it departed. Then a 2nd train arrived and decimated her leg.

She now has a 'robotic' arm and prosthetic leg. She had this to say about the pain:
"As I lay on the track I remember thinking, 'I've literally gone from the top of the world to rock bottom.' I can remember everything from what happened. The adrenaline meant I didn't feel pain."

The brain seems to temporarily shut off the pain receptors when the body endures severe damage.

Jumped into water, it hurt but I didn't really feel it because my mind got all weird before I hit the water. I didn't really get too hurt just couldn't walk for a few days.

Not too high probably 3-4 stories. It wasn't a far fall but the closet thing to me at that time

I've been wondering this too as it's one of the only 2 options I have available to me and even finding a building high enough for the jump to almost certainly be fatal is hard unless you happen to own a penthouse in a large city. Though I suppose if you did, you wouldn't be on this site anyway.

If it's very high there is no way to survive landing on head or feet

Pain is actually one of the slowest sensations our bodies can send. Smaller fibers without myelin, like the ones carrying pain information, carry signals at about 0.5-2.0 m/s (1.1-4.5 miles per hour).

If high enough you will die on impact immediately so no time for pain to reach your brain.

from my personal experience jumping off a 30 foot bridge - I didn't feel pain, as soon as I jumped I felt an instant rush of adrenaline and before you know it I hit the floor on my left side. I was conscious throughout the whole time. I couldn't get up and walk as I had broken my pelvis, 4 ribs and dislocated my shoulder. I fell onto a motorway at around 3am, there was no cars for approximately 5 minutes. Then there was a car coming my way and sadly he had his full beams on so he spotted me from a distance and was able to swerve out the way he then reversed back up the motorway and put his hazards on while he called for an ambulance. This is where I felt the horrendous pain in my lower back and stomach. I'm still recovering from my broken hip (I had 2 surgery's). So to answer your question - your body will pump you full of adrenaline which is your fight or flight response and it blocks the pain receptors.

It sounds like you may be thinking jumping into land. I've done more research about bridge jumping. Some of the info may overlap.

This 1975 study that interviewed known survivors of GGB jumps is rather interesting.

"The experience of jumping for all six of the survivors was described as tranquil and peaceful and not frightening or terrifying as one might suspect."
