These statements make me really sad. Dark skin color is exotic and beautiful. Also the curly hair. Just saying.
That's not the problem here. The problem is the treatment. I'm speaking from my own experience when I say these things, but people will actively avoid me while walking past me on the sidewalk, I've had cops called on me twice for just existing outside, I've been too afraid to learn how to drive because of the shit you see on the tv, I'm afraid to post pictures online because(I'm ugly) but also I don't want people to know I'm black, I'm afraid during job interviews that they'll see I'm black and I'll be skipped, people will always assume the worst of me until proven otherwise I don't get to just start with a clean slate when meeting people. It's genuinely just detrimental to living to be a black person at least in the us

This is an interesting topic, because of course being black in the u.s. is generally more stressful than being white in the u.s., but as a white person I have know of pretty many white people who have committed suicide, so I decided to look up the statistics for suicides in the u.s. by race to see if I could find it. The first relevant listing was published by the CDC and it showed the statistics for the years 1999 and 2017 in a couple of tables, and I was surprised to see that, at least according to the CDC, the suicide rate in the U.S. was more than twice as high for white people as for black people in the year 2017. I don't know the explanation for this, but I will post the tables for both females and for males below. In 2017, for females, the ratio was 2.8 white females for every black female and for males the ratio was 2.5 white males for every black male.

Not sure what this has to do with racism?

A bar chart about suicide rates does not reflect on racism or quality of life.
It doesn't show you the experiences of people.

It only possibly shows how different races and ethnicities deal with their problems.

Another thing to note is, not everyone who is suicidal actually acts on it. Either they can't or try not to.

E.g. A large portion of Hispanic people are devout Catholic and suicide is a serious sin. Religion is a very strong factor for why some people live on miserably rather than CTB.

So these bar charts don't reflect quality of life. In fact they give us very little information at best.

I'm sorry you feel like that. I'm black but I'm ok with my color. My problem is being ugly and short. I just wish I was average or beautiful like my family members.

I'm guessing you live in a western country. I understand just being black alone can be hard there. Sending you hugs.
I have spoken with a number of Black people over the years in both the USA and the UK who have left these respective countries to live in places like Ghana and the Caribbean because they have found the racism in these countries to be intolerable and deleterious to the mental health of their children. I can recall listening to a woman (who lived in the UK I believe it was) during an anti racism Zoom lecture/talk. She had moved from London to a smaller Southern town so that her sons would have better educational opportunities, and, every day her young sons were racially abused at this new school. They were under ten years old. One of her sons refused to eat bananas anymore because of the racist epithets thrown his way when other children saw this in his lunchbox. He developed a pathological hatred for this fruit - and this, to me, was extremely upsetting to hear. This woman said she had a lot of equity in her house and was determined to sell up and leave the UK, and I remember thinking, that after so many years of being in the UK, many white people are still not used to the fact that Black people have a right to exist there. I often wonder if racism would end if people knew the mental health toll it takes on other people ...... probably doubtful.

Yeah, I'm from the UK too and don't want to off load my experiences here (too many and too traumatising) but will say i first experienced racism at four, and the tough thing is not knowing what you did to make someone hate you - and then the realisation sinking in that you literally cannot do anything to change someone's opinion of you, no matter how you dress, or speak or treat others, they've made their mind up already.

It's the way the world is, and no matter how much BLM did to highlight injustice and sadness and anger, I feel like nothing really changed after last year. There was a time in history when racism wasn't an issue, and maybe that time will come again - but I don't think it'll be our lifetimes.

Thanks for being kind everyone, I normally don't tell people my race on the internet because it can be really unsafe.

p.s. it's actually so strange that the kindest people I've ever met online are on a suicide forum (life feels a little surreal)

Everyone knows all white people are inherently racist. Nobody gets to start with a clean slate.

The UK started the Transatlantic Slave trade. They think that because they were the first country to outlaw it that this makes up for hundreds of years of brutality and oppression - sigh. Also police have killed Black people in the UK and when this is not happening, they are harassing or degrading them as they go about their everyday lives.

I read about the recent case of two Black women killed in a park in London and two Metropolitan police officers who took photos of their bodies and distributed them to about forty other people via Whatsapp with memes and jokes about their deaths. Also reading the comments section of the repulsively bigoted Daily Mail newspaper, it is clear that there is a great deal of racism in the UK. This newspaper has one of the largest readerships in the UK, but, more than this, I listen to the voices and narratives of Black women and men who tell me about their experiences of racism in the UK and the immense pain it brings them. They speak of how racism in the UK permeates nearly all aspects of their lives from housing, to medical care to shopping to education to employment. Can you imagine having to deal with this alongside ordinary everyday problems plus the resultant gaslighting which accompanies people who state they are experiencing racism?

Racism in the UK is just as insidious. In the USA, they are more direct with their racism. In the UK, they cloak it with kindness. "How long have you lived in the UK?", "Were you born here?", "Why haven't you returned to your country of origin, it must be lovely there - so nice and hot?", "Why don't they stop these African people from crossing the Channel and coming to the UK - their family must really be missing them and this is such a perilous journey?". My favourite one was about this Omicron virus which was not concealed but very direct racism- "Africa is a filthy country. No wonder that variant started there". I find it amusing that so many people also consider Africa to be a country and not a continent of fifty four very disparate countries.
When I hear this sort of thing or, read this sort of thing online, I often respond with this article.

I was thinking of ancient times and it was just xenophobia which stemmed from fear of unknown rather than structural preconceived notions or superiority. But I guess that's actually up for debate!

I'm really sorry to hear your experiences, I'm lighter skinned too and I think if I have it this bad, I can't imagine how bad darker skinned friends of mine have it :(

The UK can be such bad vibes.

Everyone knows all white people are inherently racist. Nobody gets to start with a clean slate.
Not everyone knows or thinks that. Perhaps, it is more responsible and accurate to make claims about what you think. I doubt you are the worlds spokesperson but perhaps I missed that memo.

Not sure how things can ever improve when those who claim to fight against racism are the perpetuators of it. To say all of any one race is inherently racist, or that any entire race is inherently any specific thing... The hypocrisy really does boggle the mind. Not to mention another member sent me a DM once where they said, you can't be racist against white people. Seriously, do some people need something that allows them to hypocritically justify treating others like shit? Hate perpetuates hate. It isn't an effective weapon against hate. At least in the many thousands of years of recorded history it never was.

With that said, I have nothing against you or anyone else here. I just find comments and mindsets like that disheartening and detrimental to the individual and society. What I do have a problem with is the media who purposely spams us with slanted news and politicians who profit from the spread of misinformation and victimhood.

In the end, love who you want and hate who you want. I personally will view everyone as an individual and respect those with good character and dislike those who mistreat others. Color combinations will not factor into how I assess these interactions.

I love my skin and who I am, my food, and my culture. I have to. It's written into my DNA and self hate won't change it.

I hate the small mindedness of others.

I've tried my best to be kind and educate people during my life. But honestly... those people... who do what they do and hurt people based on skin color? They really just want a fight. And skin color is an easy identifier for them.

I've gotten angrier with age and time but I don't know how to direct it. So... I deal with suicidal thoughts and ideation. I mean duh that's why we're all here. But on race and skin... its one of the things I could never hate myself for.

I want to say you shouldn't either. But I don't know your personal experiences. So that's just too easy for me to say. So. My advice? Read your history. Cook your foods. Find people like you and celebrate yourself. Be angry. Be joyful. And feel pride. But do not turn your anger at others inward. Do not swallow their hate and try to nourish your bones with it. It really will only eat you alive.

White skin is the beauty standard in most countries. Even in my country (SEA) most of the population thinks white people are beautiful with their fair skin, colorful straight/wavy hairs and height. Even here, in a literal third world country, black features are still considered 'ugly'. It's true that being white is a privilege in most places.

Are Black features considered ugly when white people adopt them - e.g lip filler, backside enhancers alongside black hairstyles such as canerows ....

Traditional Indonesians prefer the generic white girl look—thin lips, blonde hair, pale skin, pointy nose, etc.

Modern Indonesians who grew up with Pop Culture see lip fillers, acrylic nails, etc. as 'Cool things that white Americans do' while also associating those with rap.

Rap is also considered as a 'Cool American thing'. Yes, my country loves America thanks to our former dictator Soeharto's alliance with The States officials during the Cold War. I don't want to get political so I'll stop here.

I'm Indonesian so i'll talk mostly about Indonesian beauty standards here, but these standards generally apply to other South East Asian countries too.

The beauty standards in Indonesia and most SEA countries include:

1. Fair skin
Even if you have an under-average facial structures, if you have a fair skin, you'll be 'pardoned' and be perceived as attractive. Have always been this way historically, it's part of our culture at some point. Most Indonesians love white people so much even though everyone knows that the Dutch exploited our lands and we fought bloody war for independence.

2. Straight hair.
Even better if it's brown, blonde, or red. Wavy hair is okay, you might get a rep as the adventurous/rebellious type. But extremely curly hair is a flaw. My cousin had natural extremely curly hair, she started to straighten it at the age of 10. My 5 year old little sister has loose curls, she said that she wants to have straight hair like mine because "Curly hair is not pretty". I always try to educate her that it is simply isn't true, her hair is beautiful whether it's straight, curly, zig-zag or whatever. But the reality is as she grows up, there is little choice left if she wants to fit in to the Asian beauty standards.

3. Tall nose.
The ideal nose is a pointy nose with small nostrils and high nose bridge, but not too long, big, or tall. If we draw a hypothetical line from the nose tip in side view and then another line from nose tip to the face, the angle created must be between 30 up to 45 degrees. A big, bumped, and pointy nose is still preferred rather than a big, round, and almost-flat nose.

4. Double eyelids.
Most SEA people have double eyelids. Too big or too small, you'll get made fun of unless you have a fair skin, then you're basically a cute Korean model like Kim Woo Bin. K-pop is big in Indonesia, because most K-idols have fair skin. Again, fair skin is the most important element of Asian beauty standards.

I am SEA and have color to my skin. I am not black, but I understand your sentiment completely. I myself work in media and get stressed by beauty portrayals and standards. Historically, it hasn't been quite fair either. I work in a white business that seems to favor exactly that. People who make it from my background seem to always be mixed race (half white, half Asian). It stresses me out to no end. Compare and despair, the old adage. It's hard not to when there's no one that looks like you who is successful.

I do not think that people are denying this. What people are trying to say is that everyone has problems, traumas, issues but racism adds a different and additional negative and traumatic layer to all of this.

For example, you may have a few dollars, euros or pounds in your purse and be worrying how much food you can buy at the supermarket. You go to the supermarket, and are then followed around the store by a security guard or accused of being a thief.

You might be in your car, driving, your thoughts consumed by your own personal concerns and worries - then you are pulled over by racist police under some false pretext.

You are a pregnant woman, worried about the birth of your first child... you have to worry about the fact that Black and Asian women's prenatal concerns are often ignored by the medical profession and, that there is a possibility you could die after giving birth, or your child could die, as there are disproportionately higher mortality rates for pregnant women of color.

So it isn't that White people don't have problems, it is just that being marginalised and treated differently by structures, institutions, etc for their race is not one of these problems.

For example, there is little possibility, if you are worried about housing that you will be unable to rent a home (if you have the money to do so) because you are White. But this happens to Black, Latino and Asian people all of the time. You can also expect for your children NOT to say to you one evening, that they are so unhappy with their color and that they wish they were Black, Latino, Asian etc.

-------------------------------------------------------

Nemo, have you ever seen the Black doll-White doll experiments which have repeated throughout the decades - always with the same results? The results are depressing.

I know exactly how you feel. I'm literally the only black person in my rural southern town. I'm not even that dark but my hair gives me away at times. during the pandemic I couldnt get it relaxed and so the kinky roots showed a lot. It was interesting to see my co workers attitudes change towards me when they realized I wasn't Asian like they thought. Suddenly the aweful raceist jokes they frequently made on front of me were gone. In a way that was worse because they didn't leave my memory. It taught me nobody could be trusted.

I once had a coworker ask me what race I was and I trusted him so I told him I was mixed black/white. He told me and I quote "oh honey you don't have to admit that, you could pretend to be Asian or Mexican no problem!"

That hurt me worse than if he'd just outright slapped me. I can handle disdain just fine but it's the disappointment that gets inside me. Makes me bleed a little more each day. Death by a thousand cuts.

I'm from the UK and the worst part is they say that racism doesn't exist here!

Just because they don't see black people being killed by police in the streets here like in the US.

Racism is more insidious here. In history lessons we are taught that racism and slavery was just an American thing.

And colonialism is never taught here even though most of British history was the exploitation of Africa, India etc.

Brexit has brought this 'hidden' racism and xenophobia to the surface. It's more widely acceptable to hurl racist abuse at strangers now.
As someone who is "new" to the UK, I can definitely say it is definitely just as racist if not more so overtly racist than where I'm from in the U.S. Even with the differing black diaspora issues for black people, it is very much alive and well here. The racism and microaggressions I've encountered just boil down to basic colorism. Are you a white British person? No, well then I'm going to treat you as lesser. I'm going to be rude for no reason. I'm going to be tougher. I haven't felt this way this often since I was on a kid on the playground being the only person of color in a predominantly white neighborhood. It's not nice - the worst part is the British white folks who try to gaslight me whenever I try to express my experiences. This kind of thing is par for the course for TV pundits here too. The politics here are about 20 years behind the U.S. and I am not kidding when I say that.

Have you ever tried a DNA test? Thanks to 23andMe, I found out that I'm totally white. My DNA test said I was 99.8% Han Chinese but there was also 0.2% Central Asian as well. Central Asia is around where the Caucasus mountains are which is where Caucasian people originated from meaning I could totally say that I'm white because I'm 0.2% Caucasian! After all, there's nothing whiter than taking a dna test to assume I'm another minority. 😅

Edit: I didn't mean to come across as rude

The politics here are about 20 years behind the U.S. and I am not kidding when I say that.
Such an astute comment and tbh very true. I was on Twitter the other day and saw a comment from someone in the UK which went as follows:
"There is absolutely no racism in the UK. None. There never has been".

I thought that it must take an inordinate amount of cognitive dissonance to come out with a statement like this in the face of so much evidence to the contrary. Have you ever seen any of the videos on YouTube of Dr Joy de Gruy? I'd recommend them - especially the ones on racism and cognitive dissonance.
Here is one of her videos - I HIGHLY recommend it.

Gas lighting is also fundamentally immoral because it can, in so many circumstances, emotionally destabilize a person.

It is interesting how besides the amount of racial discrimination POCs experience, Western beauty standards have adopted their genetic features and cultural aspects. Now everyone wants bigger lips, fuller hips, cornrows and 'fox eyes'.

Another thing I have noticed is that Americans are oddly obsessed with their ethnic background, especially white Americans. Like almost every other Slavic European, I have family in the U.S. Though they don't know the language nor current state of their origin country, they are terribly patriotic, even borderline nationalistic. They follow twice the amount of traditions, post about my country excessively and shamelessly talk about their superiority over other white people. This has left me with a bitter taste with my mouth as I know that if they truly cared about my country, they would first understand why they are in the U.S in the first place, instead of taking pictures of slums for their art exhibitions and openly voicing nationalistic opinions. They do not want to admit that they have white privilege, nor that they are extremely lucky to be out of this poverty-ridden cesspool (also known as my country).

One of the reasons I want to ctb is because I am black

I'm a POC. Asian, but addicted. so that's bye-bye to having money to spare or protection away from cops. I didn't need to worry 'bout security guards following me around in store as a motherfucking 8 y/o though. had/have many Black friends irl, girls and dudes. now this just hits home too fucking much.

only reason I missed out on this post till now is becuz Christmas. but I'm so glad we're finally talking about this. finally. there's a thread in the off-topic section which literally turned into a "can we not talk about politics here?" thread. smh. enough people are living under the prison-or-dead situation while not even having a safe outlet to talk about their sucidality, which is such a natural response to the very own realities we been living. a White identity is not seen as "too political". now here's the BIPOC folks and we motherfucking radicalizing and "dividing" this place?? our very own existence is just political by nature. simply can't deny that. if anyone "disagrees" (since when did facts ask for your agreement so it can be true?!), gotta say they illusioned in some way or delusioned in some way else. cuz they benefit too much out of oppression.

anyways sorry for ranting. I know not everyone wants to be reminded of this shit yet again when they're already shoulder-deep in it. so my apologies.

Edit: also I sorta feel like discussing Black people things in this thread when one isn't Black/Mixed/doesn't know many too well could be, well, kind of disrepectful. that's my take on it. after all it's up to OP to decide whether they like/want that here. so that's my two cents.

Same. Being black (or any form of POC) is exhausting sometimes. Its so shameful to say but I really wish I wasn't sometimes.
