I think most people secretly want to die but won't admit to anyone or are even in denial to themselves.

I think most are way too afraid of death for that, but they toy with the idea in times of despair. I do think they resent that some people overcome the fear and have that option. They don't want you to have options they don't have.

I think you might be projecting a bit. I look around and wonder how the hell the majority of people want to live as well. The majority of people may want to live but I guarentee every sane person has had the thought of killing themselves cross their mind.

Probably depends on the environment

I don't think most people in the US want to die, at all. I can't speak on the entire population because I'm a sheltered American.

Most people here want to be alive, they are terrified of death when they really think about it deeply and they want to create more life. They find death tragic

I dont think most here want to create more life. I find death a difficult transition, though not really tragic in the typical sense.

probably not us on the site, I know I dont, but here in the US I think making more people is a huge life goal

I agree. I find the suffering around death difficult, very difficult. I don't see being dead as tragic. I feel worse for those left alive that loved them

50 percent of all people at some point in their lives seriously think about taking their own lives which is not strange due to the high life expectancy and all the suffering that exists in the world but since suicide is taboo, most people probably keep these thoughts to themselves.

I'm not sure if people actively want to die at all times. I've seen far too many people happy off their own fumes for that. But I believe we all have a death instinct, that can be activated when our stressors overwhelm our coping mechanisms.
Plus life is just fucking unbearable for some. *Raises hand*

100%. It's just taboo to talk about for some reason.
Like when you see obituaries of young people who suddenly die but don't say the reason why I think a lot of times it's suicide

Then why do so many people, who get diagnosed with nasty diseases, do everything they can to not die - like surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation treatment, etc, etc, etc?

And when a suicide is mentioned in media, the method is often never brought up.

In my country apparently the statistics are absurdly low:

Thoughts
  • 12% had thoughts of suicide in their lifetime
  • 2.6% had thoughts of suicide in the past year
Plans
  • 4.2% had planned suicide in their lifetime
  • 0.8% had planned suicide in the past year
Attempts
  • 3.1% had attempted suicide in their lifetime
  • 0.3% had attempted suicide in the past year

Maybe some do, but I feel like most "normal" people are on an entirely different wavelength from us. They see something beautiful and infinitely rewarding in the simplicity of this life, and their survival instinct deters them from ever seriously thinking about putting an end to it. They value what they already have over the unanswered questions of death, and I envy that greatly.

Most people, from my experience, can't wrap their head around being as suicidal as I am. It just isn't something that has any reason to enter their world on a near daily basis. Likewise, I can't wrap my head around being happy with life, having that kind of mentality waking up everyday. They think I must secretly enjoy living, and you think they must secretly enjoy the thought of dying. In opposite ways, we are the same.

Dying slowly and in brutal pain is very scary. We fear the unknown that comes with death . Most people even if miserable are attached to the physical world. That's why I feel like an Alien I think everything here is pointless

To me personally that would make sense. Having the ability to exist is beyond undesirable, I don't get why anyone would wish to be burdened with human existence, having the ability to exist truly is just meaningless suffering with no limit as to how much one can suffer. The thought of being trapped in this existence for decades on end just to die slowly and painfully from old age terrifies me.

Oh yeah definitely, if they made it legal to kill yourself today in all countries or state, many people would take part in it.

I believe a life that is considered reasonable to live, or have some degree of quality, must be a combination of a few things (health, finance, love/ relationships). It is these things that make life more bearable

Of course, to a certain extent, being naive and simple minded also helps, so even if one or more of those things are off balance, they can still somehow push through it

For us suicidal people, are almost 100% definitely lacking one or more of those essential ingredients, along with us being a bit more "awake" and aware of the cruel nature of the world

I believe this is what separates people who are suicidal, and those that aren't. I do believe there are indeed more people that want to die, compared to those that don't, but its such a difficult thing to admit, since we live in a society that frowns upon it, so it always remains a mystery. But through common sense, should already reveal the answer

The absolute best combination for a huge win in life is having great health, a beautiful bank account, surrounded by people that love and support you, along with a bonus, which is being simple minded. If under these circumstances, you are still suicidal, then that's the true definition of spoiled

Most people I meet are resilient, excited about life, and have no thoughts of suicide beyond "Ugh I wish this bad time would just be over." But then, most people I meet have a strong support system, no mental illness, a partner and/or kids, lots of things to look forward to, etc. Seriously contemplating suicide doesn't cross their mind... And you can see it in response to articles or posts about suicide. They literally cannot wrap their minds around the act or why anyone would do it. We are just a decade or so removed from the popular and widespread idea of CTB being an option for only weak or selfish people who can't handle life. (Not to say people don't think like this now, but the focus is more on muh mental health)
