The title says it , everytime i hear the word suicide is sounds so bad to my ear maybe because of our education and the taboo around it.

My friend told me the other day , somebody at his job commited suicide, i just hated that word like its a bad thing to do. I just instantly got a bad feeling in my body.

He should have said , one of the guy at my job escaped.

That's what i propose , instead of saying today i will commit suicide, i prefer to change it to ;

TODAY I WILL ESCAPE BECAUSE I HAVE THE RIGHT TO DIE!

My guess is that "escape/escaping" would make humans question life in a way that would make them feel uncomfortable. "Escape" suggests leaving something unpleasant, unbearable, and unsavory. And we all know that "life is a precious gift!!!"/s

"Why on earth would someone wanna leave life? It's AMAZING here!!!"

Suicide has the societal connotation of being associated with "craziness". It's easy to keep people from doing it when a value is put on both what others think and social/religious beliefs.

su*cide (n.)
"deliberate killing of oneself"

from Latin sui "of oneself"
+
cidium "a killing"

I understand your point about the negative connotation the word has in society, and the judgments associated with the act. But will avoiding the word, creating a new taboo (even if only in your personal view) really be the answer?

When we choose not to look at something, we are choosing to emotionally distance ourselves from it. We are choosing to pretend that something does not exist, or that at least, it is not part of our life.

And it is precisely this distancing from difficult words, from the truths of life, that causes harm. Like, for example, refusing to talk about death. In ancient societies, death was part of reality. In societies seen by modernity as "primitive", death was something that should be faced with courage, in rituals that marked the passage from youth to adulthood, like being left in a dark forest, without clothes or weapons, to survive the passage of a few suns and find the way back to the village. And the ability to understand death, pain and risks as part of life was what brought the most peace to understanding the cycles we go through.

Today, as a society, we choose to distance ourselves from the "dirty and dangerous" truth. We surround ourselves with comfort, with life-extending drugs, with security technologies, with metal boxes that keep the scary world far away from our cities.

Is discomfort with the word really the problem? Or is it fear? The fear of judgment, of stigma, of how society sees the choice that the person made, and how will you see yourself if you make that decision? Because honestly, changing the name is not going to change the stigma. We can call it "watermelon". There will still be the same judgment when someone chooses to do "watermelon", as there is with su*cide.

That's the problem because it seen as taboo and not said enough.
But I get it, I'm the same way with the word "mental" and "mental illness", because of the same stigma.

In the german language suizid (suicide) is actually preferred because the more common term here is
selbstmord (self murder). So the term is already framed negatively.

I do understand what you mean but to be honest- if you said to me your friend had 'escaped' today- I'd assume that meant prison! I guess life is a prison though for many.

I recall threads in the past in which people argued the direct opposite. Some people criticised terms like 'CTB' which euphemise and sanitise the stark and messy reality of talking about death and its gloomy aftermath (grieving families, funerals, etc.). They argued that we should use language that is direct and uncensored so we have a constant reality check.

This.

The very word OP chose, escape, is a great example of escaping reality, something that has positive and negative sides. I found the choice of words quite curious.

I understand that su*cide can be seen as a form of escape, but avoiding seeing the reality, the mess, that death is can have some consequences:

- Not thinking about the possibility of surviving/failing (no method is perfect, the human body is a very resistant machine);
- Attempts on impulse, in episodes where the mental state is altered (causing greater chances of regret);
- And not taking the SI into account in planning.
Just to mention a few.

Death will never be easy. But admitting that something scares you is the first step to lessening the power it holds for you. One of my favorite book series, Dune, has this 'poem' about fear that I always keep in mind:

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Let's call a spade a spade. Killing oneself, in Latin language, is literally "suicidium". Escaping is something else. Catching a bus too.

I like to refer to suicide as setting myself free from existence, as that is what suicide is, it's the refusal to delay our inevitable fate and is the way to prevent all future harm and suffering, it's solving all problems and it's the return to the ideal state of nonexistence where nothing can concern us. In this world filled with endless pain and agony, dread and despair, death truly is beautiful and leaving this world should be viewed as the positive, liberating act that it truly is. To exit existence certainly is an escape, it's self care to me as I see beauty in being completely unaware of this cruel world, where this existence won't even be a distant memory.
