Statistically speaking most animals in this earth are born in factory farms, testing facilities. I don't understand why I am not one of those. It's a much more likely outcome.

I just don't get it. I'm miserable as a human, sure, but I can't wrap my head around why I exist in this way in the first place. I could've been a continuously impregnated milk cow. Or a male chick shredded at birth.

None of it makes sense at all.

Not sure why some people are humans (vs the trillions of ants out there, and maybe quintillions of bacteria).

Tho mayyybe consider the example lottery (tldr in bold):
  • 5000 tickets at maybe $5 each ($25k revenue)
Types of winners:
  • 3 small - $1k
  • 2 medium - $5k
  • 1 large - $10k
Prize pool ($23k total, with $2k profit to operator):
  • $3k small
  • $10k medium
  • $10k large
It's quite unlikely to be a winner, but in this (fair) lottery, 6 people have to win.

Neil deGrasse Tyson explains it well
We are really lucky and unlucky at the same time, it's stupid.

I don't get it though. Why am I am I in particular among the 6? (Especially when I feel like I would do better as a lizard or ant or something). Just because? Brute force statics?

I suppose it depends whether 'you' is a separate entity to the body you inhabit. I would tend to rather believe that the sense of self you experience is because you are a human in the first place. That your brain creates a consciousness and sense of self so highly developed that it's capable of seeing itself and acknowledging its own existence.

A cow or ant that is brought into existence does obviously develop its own consciousness. Although, it may not experience the sense of self humans do. Of course, that's hard to prove. Although- most animals do seem to operate more on instinct.

I suppose it does all hinge on belief though. Whether you believe we have a life force within us- that is capable of jumping into new bodies. Or- whether- once a living creature with a brain is born here, it develops this own sense of self.

I tend to believe the latter. I think this sense of consciousness/ awareness is a function of the brain. It's also one that takes time to develop. Were you having these existential thoughts when you were one or two years old?

I tend to believe 'we' are defined by the brains we have. If 'you' were in fact born as a cow or ant- would you be having those same thoughts do you suppose? I wish I'd been born a giraffe or a dolphin? We can't know for sure of course but, it seems unlikely to me. I suspect life as an ant would be more of a hive mind experience. Whereas I imagine cows are primarily fixated on their own survival. Food and water sources, being aware of threats around them. But- I suppose I tend to believe that 'you' wouldn't even exist if it were inside a cow.

That's only my feeling though. Mainly because I don't believe in reincarnation though. Or rather- hope it isn't a thing.

I don't believe I'm separate from my brain and body. I just don't understand why I am a human brain/body instead of some other kind. Y'know?
