i can't exactly explain why and at the risk of sounding "edgy" or whatever: i've tried cutting in the past and it has helped me to destress in certain scenarios. the only issue is i can't cut reliably because i live with my parents so it is harder for me to hide marks and get access to tools such as razors. i've been looking for a method that can produce similar effects as cutting without the need for extraneous tools or leaving marks, but i haven't been able to find anything and the internet has not been helpful. any advice? sorry if this isn't related to suicide, but i couldn't think of any other places that might have answers.

Hi, first of all you won't sound edgy sharing this here and it is totally ok. This is a judgement free space for that, lots of people also self harm here. You are not alone on that.
In my experience self harm does destress and can help dealing with overwhelming tension in a given moment, won't deny that, I turn to it when I'm really desperate for any relief, buuuut it's also true it's a momentary tool that is not good in the long run, at all, can't recommend it or that you make a habit of it. That's just the boring but true preamble.

As for similar effects though, I can recommend the classics.
Put Ice Cubes on your wrists or your preferred places for cutting. It leaves no marks and the freezing causes a very similar sensation.
Smacking rubber bands in your wrists or arms or wherever does too.
Exercise, which might not be for everyone, but if you feel the pain in your muscles the brain eats that up in a punishing manner too. + healthy. But that's the ideal one you'd turn to.
And for last, and this one only really works if you are actively trying to resist or recover from self harm and have history of cutting honestly, you can draw and trace red lines with a marker on a paper. It's some pavlovian effect shit, but if you had a habit of it, again, the brain likes it and can feed into that urge a bit.
All these might work some days, so give them a try first before actually self harming if you can.
that's my advice
I'm sure others will give you theirs for cutting secretly. That's ok too, I understand not wanting marks to be seen near family. Thighs and arms is the usual, and long sleeves and so on.
don't know under what you are that's making you turn to this form of relief, but lots of hugs at you <333

Talking from my experience the only way cutting won't leave any scars or marks on your body is if you only do what we call "cat scratches" and don't cut any deeper than that. As far as tools go any sharp object can give you cat scratches, scissors, knives, blades. But it is recommended to keep everything clean and sanitized before self-harming. I wanna add that I do not endorse self-harming in any way, but if you really need to do this, it's best to know how to do it safely and not cross any lines that could make things worse. I'll be leaving kind of a "guide" to help you understand the terminology of self-harm that I used.

It's an (unhealthy) coping mechanism, that's why it's destressing. That's what self harm is for a lot of people, myself included. I will get so stressed out in certain situations that all I think about is cutting and the moment I do it it's like I'm able to function again.

I'd say if you're thinking about switching up your method anyway you could take a look at safer alternatives maybe. When I was inpatient and we had urges to self harm, the nurses would put quite strong heat ointment on our arms and wrap it up in bandages. Which was quite a good alternative since it burned like hell (even after washing it off) and it also leaves redness and a little bit of swelling for a short time afterwards - but no open wounds or scarring. And no stinging pain while showering 🥲

They call that stuff Finalgon over here, maybe you can find it, you should be able to get it over the counter. Maybe that's just the brands name though and just any strong heat ointment will do I'm not sure.

If you decide on getting it be careful to not accidentally get anything into your eyes! I always wear gloves while applying it and always put bandages onto top so it doesn't go where I don't want it. You can use baby oil to get it off.
