I don't know for a motel since I've never stayed there, but at a hotel you can make a reservation online and pay online, or else you could go in person and pay at the desk. I don't believe you'd leave your card with anyone, it should be a normal transaction like anywhere else. If you know your stay duration and where you want to be and when, you could look up the rates online and book the hotel for as long as you need via their site. You could call/email the specific hotel if you were unsure about anything or look into reviews.

Could a person work a min wage job and afford to live at a motel full time?

No. Not really if you want to eat, too. And if using a motel/hotel, you can pay cash, too. Still works.

Depends on the location of the hotel, quality of the hotel, and hours that are being worked. Hotels can be expensive, more so in some locations than others so you'd need to look up rates in the specific location you're considering. Cheaper hotels go down in quality and be careful of the area. Then it would just depend on the job and how much you're working it. If you weren't working full time I think it might be impossible or you'd be very tight for cash. Even working full time with gas prices these days and other expenses, you'd probably be pushing it but I think it's possible, just wouldn't be good and you definitely couldn't save up any money living that way.

I travel a fair amount for work, and plan to CTB in a hotel room. Basically, you reserve a room on your CC. While the CC holds the charge on your account, the actual money isn't deducted until you check out.

You can even get (with certain hotel chains) a remote key so you can check in remotely, go straight to your room, and they won't bother you until checkout time.

Not a nice one but if you can find a place for $50 a night or less it us equivalent to what a lot of people pay in rent

Yes, usually there is a deposit amount on top of the cost of the room in case there is damage to the room, such as smoking in the room. Deposits can vary from $25 to $200. If you smoke in the room you will generally be fined about $250, depending on where you live.

Booking.com has never asked me for a deposit of any kind, and it's all online. You just give them your name at the front desk.

Also, do what you need to do to feel comfortable, but I'm also planning to CTB in a motel, and I plan to do it in the bathroom and put up a sign on the door to tell the cleaning lady not to enter and to call 911. Just feels a little fucked to expose a scene like that to some random minimum wage worker.

I don't smoke. The amount of the deposit is why I said "fuck"

You'd have to call each hotel- most hotels in my area are $25 to $50- if a hotel has a problem with a lot of parties it can be $200.

Well if you're in your 30's and have some kind of luggage or a bag on you then they won't be suspicious.
You don't leave the card with them. They will take your card details or pre-authorize ( block ) the rent+deposit during the check in and complete the process on the day of check out.
If they have DND options or Tags on the door then if you put the DND tag they won't bother you until the day of check out.

Having worked in hotels I know how it works in person, and sometimes the Do Not Disturb tag works and sometimes it doesn't - sometimes housekeepers who are in a hurry to finish their work will try to go in the room anyway because sometimes when guests leave they forget and leave the Do Not Disturb sign on the door. There is usually a second lock, a bar or chain that you pull across, so always use this when you are in the room. Sometimes desk clerks makes mistakes and check two people into the same room- it doesn't happen often but it does sometimes happen, so you want to hvae this second lock in use to keep someone from walking in on you. Whenever you leave the room hide in a suitcase anything you don't want someone to see.
