I'm curious for those who are contemplating or attempted, how did you choose your method? I'm stuck between carbon monoxide poisoning and pills. Maybe both at the same time to make sure it's painless and certain. How long is the planning process? How did you choose a date? If you have depression, how do you handle your last few days without doing something drastic that won't work or will be painful?

For me, it was a process of elimination- rather than really being drawn to a method. SN and inert gas were the two I could at least envisage myself doing. I didn't really like the practicalities of inert gas. Sourcing the correct equipment, storing a large gas canister. So, I got the stuff ready for SN a while ago. I'm waiting for my Dad to go first before I feel like I can go. I wish I had a backup method though. I don't really trust jumping. Plus, I'd rather not create a public mess that traumatizes others. I don't want to break the law so- other drugs are out. I don't tend to think Night night or SWB are hugely reliable. I've toyed with CO, although, I'm frightened of fire and I don't want to injure others. That leaves partial hanging, which sounds tricky to get right. I dread that being my standby method but, it might have to be. But for me, it was more about working out the lessor of the evils.

My first method was going to be hanging. Hanging is the most usual method of suicide here in my country of North Macedonia, but as I learned more and more about SN, i decided that the SN will be my method.

I very well may be the first SN suicide in my tiny European country. Since there are no recorded cases of SN "misuse", all you need to buy SN here is just an ID, I didn't even been asked why I needed it.

I chose CO but never bought materials needed. It's SI. I just freeze up every time at the store.
Fsh is next. Somehow went through with buying rope. Made knots, it's in place.
CO I chose because it should be peaceful. And seems pretty straightforward. Easy to buy needed materials. But so far SI very strong.
Fsh chosen due to simplicity. Method is simple, doing so very difficult.

  • Something that I had access to
  • Something that had a high chance of fatality
  • Something that did not require things that could be made illegal so as to prevent my method
  • Something that does not take that long to prep/set up
Hanging fit the bill in all of those. I can get a rope easily, rope is never going to be made illegal, hanging is a frequently used method, and the setup takes about as long as it takes me to tie the knots. Winner.

When I arrived here, the first threads I read were the pinned ones. Then I started discarding the methods that seemed more complex or difficult to access.

For example, firearms, jumping and drowning.

I live in a small town and the few buildings there are no more than 5 stories high. So it wasn't a viable option.
Firearms are not legal for civilians here. And obtaining them illegally can get you into big troubles (getting involved with criminals or drug dealers means putting your family at risk too)
I'm quite close to a river, but drowning would be impossible for me; deep water terrifies me. Although I would undoubtedly die because I can't swim.

Regarding chemicals and gases, I should investigate further to give an accurate opinion. Obtaining the materials and following the protocols demotivated me from the beginning.

So of all of them, in the end, hanging seemed to me the easiest, fast and most accessible. After reading a lot of information, watching videos of real attempts and forensic photographs, I became convinced and calm that this was the method for me.

Few things are necessary for the procedure to go well. And mistakes are easily avoidable, such as: testing that your rope and anchor points can withstand your weight without breaking, being alone without interruption so you don't "get saved", the correct positioning of the ligature and using the correct knot for it. You will only be conscious for the first 15 seconds, the rest is a matter of time with the death mechanism in action, in 30 minutes you will have left this world forever.

Several years ago, I chose partial hanging because of the ton of informaton available and the relative ease of preparing for it. Little did I know that I'd have problems with the rope, problems with its positionining, and ultimately issues with the survival instinct. I recently moved to a state where purchasing a handgun is much easier... and I recently purchased one. Ordering and paying for it online was easy... and the background check at the store took about five minutes. After I take care of some final matters, that will be my method of choice.
