"For 'All Cats Are Grey,' I wrote about my mother's impending demise from cancer. Full of despair and pain anticipating that coming event, I couldn't bear to wait for the end. So I wrote a song about it. The first verse is about the surprise at waiting in the anteroom for death, imagining what's coming next. I saw it as a vast, empty place where no one is allowed to leave just yet. That line really hit me when I first read it because it was so different than the usual "there's so much to experience, even if you're depressed, get out there and do things!" mindset that a lot of well-meaning people have and it's like...no, you don't get it....the problem is not that I'm not doing those activities and having those experiences, it's that even if I was, I'm incapable of getting anything out of them.
