Method How bad is the damage after a failed CO attempt?

In a few months, when I have the chance, I will attempt to CTB using the CO method. I've read that it's possible to get brain damage but I don't know how serious it is, will I be able to try again using another method like jumping or drowning if I do end up with brain damage from CO?
