I've often thought of running away, but the sad truth is it's not the location or the assholes surrounding me. The problem is me and I will carry that problem with me no matter where I go. I've found this out because I have moved to numerous states and I've found that unless I change me, the same shit happen - it will be Groundhog's Day. If I could leave all my shit behind and change me I would go in a heartbeat.

Not like you'd have much of a choice after completely obliterating your body by doing those "work all the time" jobs.
You won't obliterate your body driving over the road for a few years. You might working offshore depending on what you do.

The problem is most rednecks who do some of those jobs never save anything. They father multiple sets of children with different strippers. Then when retirement comes they cannot pay the healthcare before getting to Medicare and that becomes society's fault. When they fail to educate their children and their children can't compete with high value Asian and European immigrants it's not their fault .

Don't forget the smoking and drinking habits of the blue collar types either

When they end up broke in their 50s they pull the lever at the ballot box for someone who says inject bleach to improve your health. They think that surely will bring back their high paying low education job and they can have a wasteful SUV, meth head strippers every day , and a new McMansion again!

No but if I had even remotely enough money Id be on a plane tomorrow lol. Admittedly it does have a lot to do with covid, the only people here who find the restrictions draconian are either hypocrites knowingly exaggerate and mislead people or cult members and I want to stand up to authoritarianism with like minded people and not be the only person in the country who feels that lockdowns are a major violation of human rights. I remember left leaning people who used to fight against tyranny and not literally beg the government for it. But I also never fit in here, sometimes im something other than moderate. I cant compromise with every tom dick and harry. Be kind, be kind, be kind on repeat but im just so tired. New zealand is no place for radicals.

Twice. South Korea and then Spain. I went cold turkey off Lexapro and Ritalin and was not warned off the side effects or that I should taper. That led to a very bad depression. I met a lot of amazing people but friendships felt very transient. As a non-native, job prospects are not as good. Learning a new language is fun and exciting, but until you are fluent, you feel very isolated. I thought I would be a long term expat but that's not how things worked out for me. Making a new life in a new country is a very romantic idea, but the reality of it is very difficult. However, if it's something you've always wanted to try, there's absolutely no reason not to do so before you ctb. Best of luck.

@ameliacecelia I could agree more with what you said. I thought moving was going to broaden my horizons and make me more outgoing. Instead I feel more isolated than ever.

Please don't misunderatand. I think you should try it. Teaching English is the easiest way for most people. I just want to offer a few precautions. Do not go cold turkey off any medications. I don't think I would have felt so depressed had I tapered effectively. You have to also understand that as a foreigner, your job prospects will not be better in a foreign country, and hence, you can't anticipate wealth. The language barrier also makes making friends with locals more difficult. With that being sad, it's much easier to make friends with other people who share your first language just by being in such a similar situation. I also made friends who Korean and Spanish locals who had also lived abroad before and understood how lonely and isolating that experience can be at times. Those were very fast and strong friendships. I don't regret doing it. I feel strongly that most people should try it while they are able. Just don't have unrealistic expectations. You may find a wonderful new life. I met expats who opened bars, bookshops, and restaurants in their new countries, and many more who met a husband or wife. Some countries require you have a certification to teach English as a second language to get a job at a school there. I got mine off Groupon for $50. I got a job before finishing my course, and never actually finished my certification. Aside from teaching English, you can also look at being an au pair or live in nanny. Be sure the family pays for your language classes in this situation. Many places consider it customary for your train and bus passes also be paid for. For either job, it is VERY important that you confirm how close your living situation is to bus stations, train stations, and city centers, because schools and families always exaggerate location and commute times. If you already want to die, then you have nothing to lose. Might as well travel before you kick the bucket. I'm here for any questions you have.

I've thought about it.
But it seems like a lot of work, and I'd still be the same broken person somewhere else and ctb anyway.
So it's a nice dream- but for me it wouldn't fix anything.

Yes, but that saying "wherever you go there you are" exists for a reason. The place isn't so much the problem, the person is. Someone who is at peace with themselves can exist pretty much anywhere. Home isn't so much a location, it's more a state of mind.

In Ireland, we have a saying "Where ever you go, there you are".

In other words, you always bring your problems with you.

I quit my job. relationship with my s/o is in limbo. will go on a backpacking trip in Europe very soon. maybe already next week. I hope to challenge my perspective on life in general and my life in particular. it certainly will be good for some distraction. actually leaving Germany is unlikely but I wouldn't discard it either.

My life was changed by overseas travel. But I think that is only so important if you live in a sub par country - like USA

If you live in a decent spot like Benelux countries maybe it isn't so bad
