Discussion Has anyone else noticed genuine sociopaths on this site?

Hey i am new here, only posted a few times but already ran into one person who seemed kinda off. this person was pushing some weird nihilistic stuff like it was facts and kept mocking my replies, felt like they were just trying to mess with me not actually help.

i do not know if anyone else seen stuff like this or dealt with people like that here? just wondering how people handle it because it really messes with the vibe.

would be cool to hear what you all think about this kind of behavior and how to keep this place real and supportive.

you'll get that from time to time, i think some people are just past the point of sugar coating. when you're on a forum with ctb as the main factor it's going to be a hotbed of mental illness. i wouldn't say there's many sociopaths here, but you will run into cases of general apathy. most people are chill though.

Yeah, unfortunately it comes with the territory. I've been off and on here for a long time and the type of characters I've run into…bruh. You just have to ignore, actually select ignore and then move on.

These kinds of posts kinda trigger me. Define sociopath. I just looked it up, and the first definition I came across says "a mental health condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others". Other definitions are similar.

The problem is that I don't believe there is objective 'right and wrong'. If I feel a certain way or have an opinion that offends you (or anyone), and you can't deal with that, then you can call me a sociopath, because my opinions don't always align with 'social norms'. But don't forget that you also have the right to defend your opinion, which is also just an opinion.

Or if you meant that people are directly attacking you as a person, in a rude way, then no, I don't see that here. Even if people have questionable worldviews, they usually express them in a civilised way.

We seem to get the occassional troll and predator unfortunately. If they are breaking the rules, report them.

Some people just have very strong opinions though and are willing to debate them. There are options though. If they seem dangerous, inciting violence, trying to manipulate or groom, trying to encourage suicide or dangerous behaviour- it's reasonable to report them.

If they are just annoying or trigger you for some reason, without overstepping the rules here- you could put them on ignore. They could well be a troll.

If you've run into an actual argument with them, you can try to call a truce. Agree to disagree. Point out that you both seem to trigger one another and request that you both put each other on ignore.

We're bound to be discussing very deep issues here. There are bound to be strong opinions and disagreements. I also sometimes think that certain conditions mean that someone's thinking is very black and white. I sometimes wonder if that plays a part in disagreements here. Or, we simply have very strong feelings about something that seem perfectly rational to us I suppose.

I'd say the majority of people are kind here though. Even if they have their own strong opinions, most seem to have empathy and respect for others. It's really if a person appears dangerous I suppose as opposed to a bit off. I think over time though, if you choose to stay- you learn which threads to stay clear of and which members you clash with.

I don't think it's fair to equate sociopathic tendencies with nihilistic beliefs. Personally, I don't really subscribe to nihilism, but they're just beliefs, opinions, as valid as anyone elses. The world is full of people with different beliefs and opinions. You have the right to argue your viewpoint as much as they have theirs. If you want to exit a debate or discussion you're in with someone because it's gotten too "weird" for you, just say so and leave it.

For realsies though, I don't like sugarcoating things because it happens enough in real life.

Some things said by people might burn but I think the burn usually comes from a place of genuine hurt or anger (at life) and less "I want to make you fucking miserable specifically," most of the time.
