I've seen a lot of photos of people who died by hanging and a lot of them did it from a low height such that they are either a) sitting or b) would still be able to fully stand up on their feet. I won't link. Images are very easy to find. Did they just overcome SI to prevent themselves from standing up? Seems really difficult. What's to stop them from releasing the pressure on their neck either with their hands or simply by sitting up/standing?

people are pretty heavy ; all that weight goes on your throat & your spint ( i think ) so your body kinda just zzz's & starts fighting itself.
hence why when hangings were a way of public execution they did a "drop" so you would just snap your neck.

Those standing did full but only set the noose high enough it tightened and they settled to the floor.
Those who did partial in a crouch or kneeling position really had to lean into it so the noose tightened enough and held pressure long enough to pass out.

This video should help. It's called partial hanging, you simply resist standing up until you lose consciousness. It's not THAT uncomfortable and you lose consciousness in seconds, but yes overcoming SI is still difficult
