Why you'd ever fire under your chin or at any other body part except for the head is beyond me, bleeding out like that seems like one of the worst ways to go, and that is disregarding the fact that all your examples were people surviving..

I didn't say anything regarding shotguns in fact I've said in threads that it would be one of the most lethal ways, I was talking about HANDGUNS because handgun positions are the most debated on this forum, everyone knows that a shotgun in the mouth results in death 99% of the time. The variables that make a shotgun shot in the mouth successful are different than the ones that make a handgun shot in the mouth successful because they shoot two completely different types of projectiles.

Ah okay, my bad. I thought you were talking in general about brainstem shots.

Personally, I think you can do either with handgun. The key is power and placement. If someone feels more comfortable with side of the head with grip and aim, then that's what they should go with. But intraorally is extremely effective as well. The budd dwyer video shows this, as he was pretty much dead the moment he squeezed that trigger. I think it was a .357 magnum he used, which has about 1200-1500 fps velocity. But still significantly less total energy delivered than a typical 00 buck or slug round with a shotgun.

Although, if the handgun is powerful enough, I don't see why you couldn't aim to hit the brainstem and damage both hemispheres as well. I think the focus on brainstem is pretty logical, considering its the main area controlling consciousness. Even moderate damage to that area is very difficult to survive. And of course, any sort of shock to that area knocks you unconscious very easily as well.

Firearms are 90% lethal. This data includes all firearm attempts over a certain period in the US. With a shotgun that number only increases. The majority of the lethal shots in another study are through the mouth or to the side of the head center mass.

In your research regarding handguns, is it right above the ear or slightly behind the ear? From what I've gathered it really doesn't matter both will be lethal. Do you agree with that?

I like to hear from people who have put the research in.

For your question, i was planning to do side of the head with a handgun probably above the ear, but now im probably going to use a shotgun (same spot, side of head) as im hearing its very effective. do you think thats the best option?

Again, anecdotal. These were all from news articles, reddit and other online resources that discussed firearm suicide survivors. There's not very many that actually give all the details (weapon used, gunshot location, etc).

And you'll be hard pressed to find an actual study that gives these type of details.

@Johua.D on TikTok. Survived a shotgun to the mouth. I couldn't find any details on which caliber or ammo he used.

I can't tell you the best option. I can tell you the worst options though, which is under the chin followed by the temple region that impacts your optic nerves or only the prefrontal lobe of the brain. With a shotgun would it even matter though? Idk.

I personally am planning to shoot with a handgun to the side of my head.

Remember 90% success rate, 9 out of 10.

.357 magnum with 158 grain bullets, shot just above the ear right to left.

Lost all hope mentions a 97% success rate. I like my odds.

Aim for the pink circle? Can anyone explain why this is the preferred area on this forum? It seems completely made up by one user without any data to back it up. It gets reused and reused through out the megathread.

EDIT I found a source a few pages later:

Not anymore for anyone reading this in 2026. Shocking isn't it? Most states buying a gun is easier than buying a cylinder of inert gas. Good ol' USA
how is inert gas so difficult to get? i was planning on getting some in michigan and am very anxious about the process. im in this thread as i plan on getting either/both a shotgun and handgun incase, i want to leave as soon as possible as painlessly as possible, thank you kindly for your time.

Places around me only sell to business account holders, I'm sure in bigger cities it's probably a lot easier. Probably some luck on Facebook marketplace too.

Here in CA (maybe nation wide?), helium is diluted with air to prevent CTB. I'm not sure if they dilute other gasses as well. So if you go this route, be sure to check the concentration.

An important (for the sake of avoiding undesired survival) round-type question:

I have access to a 9mm gun, USA, I have Federal Premium, hydroshock, personal defense, 135 grain rounds. I was told these were pretty high quality.

Assuming I hit the right location (probably in mouth towards brainstem), how likely is survival versus regular/non defense rounds?

I don't know much about guns and would prepare carefully, but from what I understand defensive rounds are intended to not go through multiple bodies? Are they significantly more or less likely to be suicide-effective than regular rounds? If less assured, what 9mm brand and type would you recommend?

If using a shotgun, whats the best way to position yourself? I was thinking of sitting in my car, shotgun on the floor against the seat, and I'd bend over and put in my mouth. I'm just unsure about best way to angle so I'm aiming correctly? Also scared of flinching. I've dry fired a bunch but never actually fired a gun.

No not pressed against roof of mouth, want it at like 45 degree angle up towards the ears I believe

??

I didn't say that.

Yes, the brainstem is located roughly in-line with the ears. Directly behind them.

If I did this do I want to have the shotgun upside down (is in- barrel upside down I mean)?

I'm going to buy a gun in a few hours. I have a 9mm but I'm not confident in my aim. I plan to get a .45 revolver, hollow point. Through the mouth, slightly aimed upwards towards the brain stem.

Surely, this should all but guarantee my death right?

I hate that the firearm method is the most effective and also the most bloody.

Pentobarbital should be easily accessible for everyone. Why would the government even want us to resort to gruesome methods to CTB?

I have an AR-15 with 5.56 rounds. I'm sure a shotgun would be better but would an AR-15 work? Should I put the barrel in my mouth or aim for my head? Where would be best? I also have a 9mm pistol but I'm worried that wouldn't do the job quick. I'm no gun expert but I know hollow points are what I'd want. Can you just buy those from any gun store? Would my pistol be sufficient with a hollow point round to the side of the head?

Revolver can be more certain from what I've read but 9mm is so common and used so much. Hollow points are a must.

Any .50 cal rifle with hp should do the job. Powder type should be largely irrelevant because this is from point blank range and you're not planning to use this again. You're not going to find a whole lot of information (I checked) available on muzzleloaders damage to the human body, mainly due to them being ancient. If you want more info send me a pm.

if i were to use a handgun and ammo this is what i would use.

most powerful handgun highest velocity is the .460 magnum. also the 500 magnum

imo this is the best handgun ammunition. 2150 Feet Per Second in an 8 inch barrel .460 handgun . copper alloy 15 times tougher than lead and hollow point:

here shoots the .460 magnum . but it's with a 5 inch barrel which would be even less powerful than an 8 inch barrel. totally explodes the ballistic gel head.

this .460 seems wide barrel so idk if it can fit in my mouth so i'd have to aim at side of head. but there other models with seemingly narrower barrels which might fit in my mouth.

i know people say only 90% with guns. yeah but most failures probably used a .22 caliber handgun and probably aimed at their face and flinched with no experience and no research where and how to aim , no practice. . look at that video and research this gun and ammo and how is that going to fail with practice dry firing? idk what that 90% means i assume it's mostly aimed at head but could be also at body imagine a .22 or 9mm aimed at body.

i know many now are on an anti ai thing .but even ai said an adult grizzly bear 0% survival if hit with this ammo at 1950 fps in the side of the skull, 1950 fps is the velocity of the 5.12 inch barrel shown in video. but there are longer barrel handguns of the .460 . an 8 inch barrel or 10 inch barrel would be even more velocity and more power.

In reading about firearms, it came up that the sound of a firearm, like a revolver, or rifle is so ungodly loud even inside a house, that everyone within half a mile will be calling 911 after hearing a shot, or at least most people nearest to the shot will be doing so. A suppressor helps somewhat, reducing the sound by a third but it's still extremely loud and will call down the law unless it occurs somewhere very remote or in an area and time where gunshots are normal (like a rural area where people routinely practice shooting).
