  • Hey Guest,

Today, OFCOM launched an official investigation into Sanctioned Suicide under the UK’s Online Safety Act. This has already made headlines across the UK.

This is a clear and unprecedented overreach by a foreign regulator against a U.S.-based platform. We reject this interference and will be defending the site’s existence and mission.

In addition to our public response, we are currently seeking legal representation to ensure the best possible defense in this matter. If you are a lawyer or know of one who may be able to assist, please contact us at [email protected].

Probaly yes... they even take our phones, and we have like 15 minutes a day to use the phones on the wall. They are prison for the mentally ill.
I spent 3 years in psych wards. Never really minded the phone part - nobody cares = nobody to call. Still agree I'd never tell a physician I am suicidal. I tell them nothing of the sort.

That said, some hospitals can be pretty helpful. Others can be worse than jail. It varies widely - the staff, attending doctor, nurses, funding, insurance, etc. Huge difference between a nice facility and a state run hellhole.

What is your opinion on this?

I'm sure it's one reason but probably not the biggest reason men are at higher risk. Men are less likely to open up to other people, and they are more likely to succeed at suicide.

I told my GP I was suicidal (UK) there was no mention of hospitalisation.
I'm aware of the situation in the US, it's the same as their prison system, any excuse to make a profit.
If the current incumbents get their way over here we'll be in the same position as the US health care system.
Some people over here just can't grasp what's at stake, I fear it's probably too late.
I no longer attend my GP, although I don't have to pay for it or prescriptions, I don't think there's anything he could do to help me.

No surprise in the least. Although I doubt it would change my mind, I'd be willing to go to a therapist and see if they could convince me that life is worth living if I weren't afraid of psychiatric hospitalization.

Involuntary psychiatric hospitalization is rarely used in Europe or Canada. Possibly because they can't charge patients for the forced care, due to their nationalized health care system.

On the Doctor Oz show when they were talking about Doctor assisted suicide, they said that someone was screaming at the top of their lungs in the hospital for days and nobody could do anything to help them. Apparently the pain medications were doing nothing.

This is what I can't have. It is absolutely terrifying.

In a nutshell, mentioning suicide and getting committed against your will could not only make your life harder, but could make you even more suicidal. Tons of medical debt for being imprisoned against your will, filled with drugs that could be harmful to your body, potential discrimination from outsiders, being blacklisted from certain jobs that are considered too "dangerous/classified," people are more suspicious of you and trust you less, and if suicide by firearm is your #1 way out AND you're in the U.S., involuntary commitment leads to a life ban on legal firearm ownership. Want a $93,000 hospital just for even surviving a suicide attempt? See: https://sanctioned-suicide.net/threads/expense-of-surviving-a-suicide-attempt-in-the-u-s.14777/. I shudder at the thought of how expensive it is to even be stuck in a psych ward for several months without insurance.

Exactly. I know that in my predicament (I have student loan debt from two degrees) on top of the issues I face in day to day life, additional hospital bills along with a mark on my record (which will affect my future, jobs, rights, etc.), and more stigma, poor treatment against me; that would be more than enough to send me over the edge and even just force SI out of the window. I'd would CTB at the earliest possible moment with the next highest chance of success (jumping, or hanging, or freezing/warming to death (if summer).)

I think we all need to campaign for medically assisted suicide for those who want it, especially those over 75.

What is your opinion on this?

Older men are supposed to, unofficially of course, 'have their shit together". Older men in need of help = weakness in the eyes of society.
