tI'm not sure about the erotic part, but if you want to practice passing out, the only possible answers, IMO, are: 1) either hold the rope in your other hand, so as you pass out, you automatically let go of it and thus release tension or 2) do it with a partner.

If you have no partner it´s essential to hold the free and of the rope with your hand but it is also important to use a non constricting noose. I know a "with partner story" were they used a hangmans noose. When the hangman let his unconscious partner down it was impossible to loosen the noose due to the friction in the multi coils. They had no sharp knife handy (what one should always have in such a situation) so he used a lighter to burn through the rope, better a burned skin than unintentionally dead. I don´t have to explain what this means concerning a hangmans noose if you don´t want to survive.

I saw some pics that were leaked of him hanging from the clothing rod in a closet. IIRC anyway -- I'm a few years past that and have done drugs, had sex (not hanging from a closet rod like ol'Dave but it was satisfying enough at the time ), and slept more than a few times since then. At the time I had SO. MANY. QUESTIONS.

I have the same question

because I have only heard of mostly men accidentally dying this way too

and then with women if they do die in either fiction or in real life during such an act it's with a partner during consensual sex and consenting to being choked during sex
or it's with a partner where they didn't consent to being choked during sex

or either they pass out and then come to or they seize instead of dying

Oh OK. That makes sense. I know someone that did die from this many years ago but the family told everyone it was a suicide because they were embarrassed.

That's actually quite common. I had a friend that worked in law enforcement and she did death investigations. She said it's not uncommon for family members to sanitize the death scene to make it look like suicide or an accident. She said there's usually some evidence of repetition in the scene. She talked about one scene where there were marks on the bed frame where the victim would tie the rope to secure it while he did his thing.

I'd sanitise only the words, eg calling it "dangerous rope play", tho idk why ppl would tamper with a potential crime scene, when they could be legally implicated.
