Probably they meant Cyanide,. Yes it's painful but the more you swallow at once the faster it will be, Though still painful up to some point. Regarding pain not recommend, regarding lethality it's very lethal within minutes. The decision is yours only.

I have some experience with what cyanide poisoning feels like (wasn't close to a lethal dose) and I remember feeling dizzy, light-headed, and had pains in my stomach and forehead.
Also had a loss of focus, balance, etc.

Cyanide is painful as frick but in a high dose you only got time to scream out in pain before passing out ideally.
Issue is taking in enough in. For gas breathing in enough would be problematic when pain hits right away. For swallowing if I recall right some forms need to get metablolized so the speed would depend on the body in that case.

Hydrogen cyanide was one of my alternative methods I had considered, but have decided against it. I have no firsthand account of what the pain is like, but I remember reading somewhere (sorry, I can't remember the source; it's been a while) where a person had ingested potassium cyanide capsules and tried to record what the pain was like before losing consciousness. Took a few minutes to kick in, but when it did, he described it as his whole body being lit on fire, from the inside. It's not instant asphyxiation unless the concentration is really high, but even so, it could be a whole minute or two or three feeling that kind of pain before dying. Unless one of your other alternative methods is self-immolation, I don't know if this would be a good route to go. Pain appears to be just as agonizing.
