they might if they were deep, but if they were light the marks may only stay for at most a month or a few

it depends bc even if they are cat scratches (deepness level) they can leave marks- i mostly do cat scratches whenever i cut and didnt go into the second layer of skin but it still left dark and noticeable scars for me.

What exactly does "cat scratches" mean in context of self-harm? I've seen many people use that term.

I think she means like small scratches on your skin which are not deep at all. Like when a cat scratches you by accident.

its when u break the epidermis (which is the first layer of skin) its normally when the blood beads up- yk when u reach the second layer when it shows white too

yeah its basically like that but remember that ur sh is always valid at any deepness level-just because its not that deep doesnt mean its any less serious! ❤️

how deep are we talking?
like getting to the second layer of your skin will leave a mark there indefinitely.. to know if it's the second layer of skin the cuts are usually white before filling up with blood

Oh, so like... when you cut, you see a white layer, which (usually) takes a couple of seconds to fill with blood, right?

cat scratches mean "only affecting the epidermis, or the first layer of skin"

there's also styro, meaning "affecting the dermis, or the second layer of skin"

and beans, meaning "affecting the hypodermis, or the third layer of skin"

both styro and beans are called that because those layers of skin look like styrofoam or baked beans when you cut that deep

if you go really deep, then you might reach the laffy-taffy, which is the thing that binds the skin with muscle, muscle itself, which i don't know of any special term for, or even bedrock, aka. the bone.

as far as I'm aware, most of these terms come from the subreddit called "r/madeofstyrofoam"

yeah ur right abt the white layer- and yeah "cat scratches" is just the 1st layer so if u cut and dont see any white then u just made cat scratches but in my opinion i love doing cat scratches the most since i feel like i can do more at one time and its easier to take care of/ less chance of getting an infection and they still leave scars for me.

i prefer doing styro's because i like to see the scars it makes. it sucks having to hide them afterwards, but it feels too nice to look back at them for me.

the only reason i don't go deeper is that i don't want to get medical attention

I think it depends on your type of skin, the location and also the type of self harm you are doing and severity of it. I tend to scar easily so a lot of my marks are still very visible on my arms and hands from years ago.

But what will for sure leave scars from self harm is mentally and emotionally from the pain and reason why you did it.
Sending you a hug <3

tysm and yeah it might leave marks then but u can always use scar cream (idk what its called) to make them more faded-

yeah i like doing styros too sometimes but my go-to is always cat scratches bc i get noticeable scars too and most people think i go super deep when thats not true- and yeah i also dont know how i feel abt medical attention like i do want to end up getting stitches bc i want the attention but also it might be awkward calling someone to take me to the ER

Depends. I have plenty of permanent scars on my arms and thighs from self harm.

Depends on the severity. I have self harm scars on my left forearm from about 12 or so years ago. Every once in a while when I'm in a short sleeve and the sun shines I realize how fucking obvious they are. I wish I'd never done it. I wish I'd just focused on my upper thighs where at least nobody would be subjected to it. I have a bunch there but I have fat ass thighs and I never wear shorts that are that short in public, so. Yeah. Self harm obviously leaves scars. Just used a regular old razor blade. The scars have never left. Probably never will, unless I get some sort of surgery/treatment/tattoos of some sort
