The consciousness of most people are probably reset after death. It doesn't matter if there is afterlife or not. But some souls may linger for a while in the form ghost or recalling a past life. There are some evidences of these.
I just never ever want to be conscious entity again, there's no life I could ever be offered that I'd happily be reincarnated for. People are free to believe that we become someone else after death which still makes absolutely no sense to me at all or believe they'll reunite with their loved ones in some ethereal Disney fairytale world where everything is wonderful and peaceful, each to their own but I highly doubt death will be fair to us, to give another shot at existence or live in eternal happiness.
Eternal consciousness is the worst possible torture I could think of, so is living through thousands of different lives.
