Do you think "saving someone's life" is the right wording when it comes to suicide?

Some people would disagree. It is a quite emotional topic and it is probably up to the individual to decide. And it depends on the case in my opinion.

No, I absolutely don't think so. If I had to choose a phrase for it, I'd maybe go with "Continuing someone's existence" since it sounds more neutral to me.

Of course, some peole are going to disagree. To those people, I ask what they think they're doing. Their thought process is understandable, though :P

Technically that is the right wording as preventing suicide is preventing a death so it is making that life continue therefore saving it. Tho whether a life is continued or not shouldn't matter. What should matter is that a person doesn't suffer and preventing a suicide doesn't mean their suffering stops. Suicide prevention is too overly obsessed by others as suicide isn't the problem at all but what causes people to want to suicide in the first place. "Saving" people who really want to die isn't saving them. To save them is to allow them to die when they want to or to actually give them the help they need.

I think it's for the person in question to decide. They may well go on to be grateful that the person 'saved' their life and enabled them to have another shot at it. Alternatively, they could well feel like they prevented them from finding peace and release from suffering. I think 'prevented' a suicide is more accurate to 'saved a life'.

I do think it's more than likely someone will be stopped though- if they attempt to suicide in front of a lot of people or, they let people know. I'd be more curious as to why they chose a time when they would likely be stopped. Is it because a part of them hopes to be stopped or, is it because it's an impulsive act? In which case- are there more grounds for trying to stop them? I'm not sure even I could just stand back and let someone jump. I'd maybe see if they wanted to talk- at least.

I'd go with that too. We have no idea what happened later.

I'd also draw a big distinction between talking someone down and physically intervening. The former leaves the decision in the hands of the person concerned.

I'd prefer to say "they were given an opportunity". We all know it's easy to make rash decisions when life is not panning out the way it was meant to be and perhaps that individual needed to be given an opportunity, a chance to rationalise their thoughts.

Apologies but, you're very much wrong. When I registered to this website today, I confirmed that I was not 100% pro-lifer and I wanted to make that crystal clear. Definitely agree, with all the disinformation going on these days whether it's fake posts, fake news, fake videos, I get it. It's hard to find the trust in people but I'd like to think members of this community are here for their valid reasons.

most people don't have a nuanced enough understanding of suicide to see it as anything other than saving a life honestly. i had a classmate once brag that she stopped someone jumping because she tackled them, as she saw that as a heroic act and not ridding someone of their liberty and prolonging their suffering. i'd only consider it saving a life if it was someone who genuinely regretted it and reached out for medical assistance after the fact.

Unless the person in question can really turn everything around and get rid of SI, I would say it was a lost opportunity and an artificially extended suffering.
