Discussion Do you often think about nukes going off?

Sometimes (actually quite often) I just stand outside and picture a nuke going off in the distance. I don't know why I do this tbh, but I like visualising it. Not that I'd want people to die or anything like that, but idk, it calms me imagining it. Thinking that theoretically, at any moment a nuke could vaporise everything

I love thinking about the end of the world.. especially humans being their own demise. Gives me a quick & easy exit I can't chicken out of and humans die from the consequences of their own egos. Personally, I really don't like people and it's getting worse everyday.. they're cruel and hierarchical and greedy and tribalistic and hypocritical and arrogant and small and biased and vindictive and self-righteous.... I hate them.

Also, thinking about the majority panicking about imminent death and absolutely breaking down into devastation and horror while I and people like me anticipate peace is a satisfying fantasy.

I had this crazy dream recently of a nuke going off a couple apartments over from my old apartment while I was still living there with my family. It was close enough that staying for even a couple hours would be a health hazard, so I had to pack in a hurry and leave. My mother decided to stay and live the last moments of her life there, and she just told me I had to contact this one long lost acquaintance.

Other than that, I don't really worry about geopolitics all that much. Humans have been playing the war and power game for millennia and this particular moment in time isn't all that different or interesting to me. I doubt nukes would go off soon or without warning.

Yeah I mean, it's probably extremely unlikely, and in my case I prob wouldn't even see one, because I live in a very rural area and I'm surrounded by mountains. Idk, the mushroom cloud looks beautiful though. It's weird that something so deadly can look so pretty

While I never thought much about nukes, I always imagined a huge asteroid flying towards the Earth that couldn't be stopped. Like you said, most people would be panicking, but I would be as calm as could be while I waited for the end. I wouldn't change anything about how I live either, would just keep drinking the same whiskey, and playing the same video games. Bring on the end I say.

Like you said, most people would be panicking, but I would be as calm as could be while I waited for the end. I guess it's only natural that people would be panicking in such a situation, but I prob wouldn't. If it's something inevitable and there's nothing you can do about it, then why even bother

I would only panic if all the looters got the whiskey first. Even without asteroids and nukes coming, when I can't get alcohol it sucks because being sober sucks.

Recently I asked chatGPT which impact getting nuked would have. Depending on where it went down. It gave me Hiroshima as example. With descriptions of survivors. I was surprised that not all people died immediately. Which makes this more scary than I imagined it to be.

It stated less than 500 meter distance many people die immediately. But up to 2 kilomermeter distance. Some people still had many years or decades ahead of them. Not sure if my summary was that good though. There is probably some truth in it. Even though not everything has perfect empirical evidence/certainty. I came to the conclusion a nuclear war would not guarantee an immediate death as most people on here (me included) desire it.

Very true, the only way it could lead to total human extinction would be if large numbers of nukes were used, causing a nuclear winter, and even then absolute extinction wouldn't be guaranteed. In any case it wouldn't be instantaneous but long and extremely miserable. And even if most of humanity deserves it, I'd be really sad for all the other creatures on Earth, as a nuclear winter would inevitably cause a mass extinction and they all would suffer, not only humans.

I think there was even a guy who survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As far as I know modern nukes are way deadlier than those used on Japan though

In a similar vein to the topic and this comment, I once dreamt that I awoke in the night to a bright red light illuminating the darkness. I wrapped myself in a frog blanket (as in, a blanket shaped like a frog that I have never owned), and went outside to see an enormous asteroid barreling toward me. I said to myself, "Whose blanket is this?" Then I woke up.
