It feels like a chore sometimes. I think the most I ever went was like a week. You start to feel itchy after a few days too.

Yeah, especially because I stay home bedridden the entire time. The itchy part is so real, have to shower at like 3 am sometimes because my body is so itchy that I can't sleep lmao.

There have been times I have gone months, except for washing my face and hair to be presentable if I have to go out for something. In those times you also hit the underarms and other nooks and crannies where things can collect... but the overall scrubbing isn't always necessary depending on your lifestyle.

People have a false sense of what is required. Bathing too much can actually be bad for you, harsh on your skin and washing away microbacteria and oils that are beneficial to your ecosystem. You can look up for studies and information from doctors. I don't remember as I haven't looked it up for a while, but I think daily bathing is particularly not recommended actually for skin health.

If you aren't active and aren't rolling around in the dirt... there is less need for the daily thing. A lot of men and women with long/thick hair don't wash their hair daily even if they do shower otherwise... which means their head might not get washed often at all... so keep that in mind too when thinking about the "gotta shower multiple times a day or else" people.

Also, a lot of people are too heavy with perfumes and deodorants and such to cover over smells whether they are clean or not. Making yourself smell good doesn't make you clean. It just disguises the smells if there are any.

I shower once every 3 days. Wash my armpits daily with soapy water at the sink, I sniff them before washing. every. day. sniff sniff

Even when not depressed I do not shower every day. Wash my hair once/week unless I get sweaty in the summer. I will sometimes do a 3 minute rinse with just water if needed. Washing every day ia not necessary if you do not get that dirty.

Also, when I do take a shower the fastest shower I ever took was about 10 minutes when I had very short hair and wasn't really dirty and was smaller. I typically am in the actual shower closer to 20 minutes counting hair-washing time. In the bathroom a little longer after for post-grooming like if I need to shave, brush teeth etc.

BUT... I've known people who showered multiple times a day but were never in the shower more than 5 minutes... and I would see them afterwards and they would have grey/black under most of their fingernails... and I would always think... what's the point of all those showers that you clearly aren't washing anything very well?

I have said before... some years ago I was in a restaurant bathroom washing my hands after doing the deed... and a man walked in as I was washing my hands and he said to me that he was pleased to see someone making a good effort at hand washing. It was odd, but I also knew exactly what he meant... and it reminded me how sad things are that he was legitimately impressed to see someone washing their hands well that he felt compelled to congratulate me on the effort.

So, I imagine a lot of folks just doing bare minimum and going through the motions in their daily shower rituals and not actually being any more clean than I could be with a week of no showers but making sure I give a good wipe to areas that do get dirty.

Basically... there's cleaning and being clean... and those two are not at all necessarily the same thing in reality!

Yeah, a lot of times. I went a whole week without showering last week. I just showered right now and it took me so much courage and so much strength to do so. Some people might think it's easy, but it's really not. Especially when your body is tired. For me so far, the only thing that helps is to have warm baths, but I understand this might be difficult for some people.

So I've got showering all wrong then. I thought I was supposed to scrub my whole body every time, when I actually only need to worry about scrubbing my armpits and hair. Like if I wasn't active and sweating that day I should be fine with just rinsing everything else. It can help me get out of the shower faster too.

This is a perfect way to describe it. It's difficult cause I have no strength, it feels like I'm about to do manual labor.

When I was a child it was RLLY bad. Like, I remember one time I went a whole month without showering. And for the past couple of years, I'd pretty much take weeks until I would actually shower. My parents never rlly taught me good hygiene growing up, so that's how things like that ended up happening. Thankfully I've been taking better care of myself when it comes to things like that. I do agree, it definitely feels like a chore most days. Imo the whole showering everyday thing seems too much anyway, but maybe that's just cuz of how I feel abt it idk

Generally no? I try to shower every day. At worst I might skip one day and shower the next but that's not often. I think the longest I have ever gone without showering in my whole life was about 2-3 days.

Maybe a few days, I was half thinking I'd take a full bath, but time slipped, then I eventually took a shower.

I know it's gross. I have bad hygiene.
But on average I'm sure I go for a weeks without a shower, I'd say ~2 (this includes brushing my teeth as well)
I think the longest I went without bathing was for a few months
My skin became so flaky...like it was literally flaking off
I didn't clip my nails either so they broke off
I don't even remember how I smelled...thing is I don't think I smelled anything
But then I ended up getting a UTI which has been the most sick I've ever felt, it was horrible and I felt after pains for months afterwards
Nothing has really ever helped my hygiene tbh, I just rot a lot

I'm going to be very vulnerable here, but I went through a bad time where I was lucky to shower like twice a month. I was so isolated and depressed, that I genuinely forgot it was a thing I should do. I wasn't brushing my teeth either, and was overall in a bad shape. Now I'm still having a hard time, but I do try my hardest to shower bare minimum every other day. I've turned it into a coping skill and something I actually enjoy, rather than a chore. It wasn't easy, but I finally have a good relationship with showering and it's my safe place.

The tricky part with your own smell is you're going to get used to it... It's hard to be on top of your own smells for that reason. The armpits and other nooks & crannies you can get a special whiff of odor on those, though, and that's going to tend to be where there worst of it is.

Unless you are rolling around in mud and shit (literal or figurative) then your smells are going to mostly be coming from the excrement of the bacteria that is always living on your body. Same thing as rotting food... the food doesn't really fall apart so much as it gets eaten by the bacteria you can't see and then they poop all over it and as that builds up you start to see and smell that.

There are UTIs and fungal infections to keep on top of too... which is another reason why it's important to keep those genitals clean... but being too harsh with soaps all the time isn't necessarily good for you either, so there is a balance between what you need and what is too much.

Yeah, when I get especially depressed I tend to go quite a few days without showering. I just cover up the smell with perfume or something and it usually works at the cost of people wondering where the perfume smell comes from (it's a scent that, as far as I know, hasn't been sold by the brand that sold it for 10+ years, so I guess it smells like an old person?)

I was showering once a week for the last few years and am up to 2 showers per week, thanks to group therapy. I rarely leave my room, and rarely have any body odor (as far as I can tell). I use a bidet at home, so my parts get rinsed a few times a day.

I know it's common for people who don't bathe regularly to not notice their own scent, so even tho I don't sweat much and don't think I smell, I am pretty paranoid about it. If I were well enough to work, I'd shower daily or every other day. Since I'm not working & have nowhere to go most days, it seems like a waste of water.
