Ah yes, the problem of evil. OPs question is one that theologians have been unable to give a satisfactory answer to for centuries. For me it boils down to two possibilities...

1. An omnipotent, omnipresent, all-loving God does exist, but to understand why they allow suffering you would need to dedicate your life to prayer and scripture and attempting to discern that which is inherently unknowable.
2. There is no God.

Its not for me to question your faith, but I feel like the simplest answer makes more sense.

That's why people who choose to believe (or are made to believe by the system they live in) will say you are being "tested" if everything in life is just shit. Because apparently their version of god is completely insecure and needs constant appreciation from billions of people.

Thought about this today:

If God exists and created all animals, then why are they such similar species, for example:
Mammoths / elephants
Cats / Lions / Lynx
Wolves / dogs

Why didn't God just create individual animals? Because it's just an accident, there is no God, everything that happens to us is an accident

Well, dogs are just tame versions of wolves, which man has bread to be this way or that, there's tons of evidence for that. Elephants are an evolution of Mammoths, same with every other related species, they evolve differently in some areas because of different surroundings. A brown fox would be seen from miles away in the snow, but a snow fox is much harder to find, so the foxes with the white fur survive, while the ones with the brown fur are dinner.

The question you really have to ask is if the current state of any living being (including plants) is it's final state, or if evolution will make it even better in a million years. And if so, if this isn't Gods plan all along, if maybe the final product so to speak, isn't here yet. Just because we have computers doesn't make us the pinnacle of existence for all time, in a million years the dominant life form will look at us and see us as primitive idiots. And in two million years the same will be thought of them and so on and so forth.

I've never understood the whole 'follow your dreams' talk because this species has spent eons learning how to out survive everything else until you die anyway.

Yes, but God cannot necessarily directly control people or events.

My belief is that selfishness is a major problem brought upon by God's gift of free will. That selfishness causes others to suffer -- for example, one person praying for riches may use God's gift of luck to become a sleazy landlord and run a real estate scam that makes people homeless.

People need to make the effort to be considerate and thoughtful of each other.

I'm a christian but not a very good one. As far as the big questions go like why does suffering exist etc, I totally get that, I have problems with it myself. I love Jesus because he defended the weak with his own body. The way I see it, even if he isn't the son of God, I respect what he did. It was more than what I'd be willing to do.
People do a joke about how jews and muslims "accept the father but not the son", I'm more of the opposite.
I have no problem with anyone else's beliefs, I don't have the answers. I'm not a biblethumper. I'm just sharing.

1. I don't know what would convince me of a god, what the sufficient evidence for me to believe in a god would be. But if god exists, he has surely endowed me with the gift to think rationally. Rational thinking literally means believing in things only when there are sufficiently good reasons to believe.
2. But, I know for sure I haven't seen it. That the evidence is nowhere near demonstrating the existence of a god. In fact, for every phenomenon that the theory of god is meant to explain, we have much simpler and better explanations. So, everything in my experience shows the opposite, the myths are most likely nothing more than stories.
3. If god exists, he, by definition, must know what it would take to convince me, right?
4. Given points 2 and 3, god either, (a) does not exist, or (b) he does not care or doesn't want me to know that he exists.
5. In either case, it's not my problem. If god indeed does exist and the only way I am saved in this context is by believing without good reasons, that god is evil and I hold nothing but contempt for him.
6. But the probability of that is so mindbogglingly tiny, it is a complete waste of time to ponder it.

I don't believe in anything. I use to be a hardcore believer. I was a born again christian but things started to deteriorate. From there I got into things like gnosticism and hermeticism, but I don't believe in anything and that fell apart too.

It still drives me crazy when people deny these facts. I take it extremely personally when they feel the need to talk about God as pure love, wisdom & harmony. It feels like they're spitting in my face & punching me in the gut because I've tasted so much pain & humiliation in my childhood that I can never forget that evil, not love, is built into everything...
