If keeping the simple face mask in place is a problem, can't a military surplus respirator be used ? should be simple enough to attach the debreather tubes to the inlet and exhaust valves once replaceable filter canisters are removed.
The old Soviet GP5 mask is readily available. It did not rely on elastic straps to hold it very securely in place, but was made of rubber which stretched over the full head. Not the most comfortable, but very secure.
Yes, a person could use a full face mask, but many don't like the idea of having so much of their face covered up. People react to it similar to how they react to an Exit Bag, for some reason it creates a visceral reaction, maybe its the idea of being smothered by the bag/full mask. I also think that because the mask is medical many feel it's just the right choice. They don't have as much issue dying with that on their face and being found with it on (if no one removes it before the body is discovered).
