Hi friends,

I haven't commented on here in a while, but today was very tough. I apologize that this is going to be extremely vague, but it's a situation that wouldn't make sense in context, and I'd just really appreciate any generic understanding response.

I'm visiting my parents for the weekend, and they happened to see something I own and made a very big assumption of me (no, it's nothing sexual). They were very upset at this completely wrong assumption and I had to have a long talk with them explaining it. They seem to understand now but were concerned I was involved in some pretty serious stuff.

As an example, imagine you bought an airsoft pistol and your parents think it's a real gun and you're committing crimes with it, so you have to explain you're not a criminal to your parents.

Seeing your parents disappointed in you is the WORST FEELING EVER. I can't get my mom's face and words out of my head and feel so ashamed even though i did nothing wrong. Hopefully it will pass. Can anyone else relate to disappointed parents breaking your heart?

If I could take a cue from my own experiences in seeing 'those kinds of reactions' in my own parents, I would say to you: Keep faith in the strength of your relationship with them. They may need time to fully digest and process. The truth is on your side, and your history and actions going forward will reinforce this.

Whatever you're feeling right now, use it as a life lesson and cautionary tale for your future self, to always take great care with your parents' hearts.

In navigating your guilt: Commit in your mind to always doing right by them, allow for hurt feelings being an occasional cost of love, remember how much you love and care for them, and remind yourself that their reactions in that moment were emblematic of the love and care they have for you.

Wishing you well in getting through this, my friend.

Thank you, hue. Yeah, over such a silly thing. My parents also had me later than most, so there's a very noticeable generational divide between us that complicates stuff like this sometimes. It makes it harder to translate newer culture to them.

Thanks man, really appreciate the thoughtful comment. Today it seems like they realize they jumped the gun & overreacted, so I'm feeling a bit better about it.
