I'm not fond of the ctb acronym either although I sometimes use it because it's so short to type.

Before this site I had no idea what ctb was, it took sometime to associate that with death etc. If you read some posts here carefully, you will see that they actually are scared of the concepts of suicide dying etc. Using ctb might trigger less discomfort, help them ease into the ideas.

I too, get weird vibes when the word 'catch' is used when I do something of my own volition. I can 'catch' a cold, but to me it doesn't make sense to play 'catch' with Death. Certainly not when I'm at odds with dying of 'natural causes'. In real life when you take the bus to get to a destination, the bus can either (a) arrive on time, according to schedule, or be (b) earlier or (c) later than usual. Regardless, you are putting yourself in the bus driver's hands. Here, I choose to go on my own terms, and the decision is made of my own free will.
I prefer the word 'summon'. You 'summon' the bus. 'Summon' gives the impression that you're the one calling the shots.

Oh guys...
I am not sure if any of you had ever been active on the Usenet group alt.suicide.holiday - this is where the whole thing with the metaphor "catching the bus" began. Many years ago.
There were quite a few people comparing the NG to a bus stop where strangers come together and do some small talk - sometimes more serious conversations than small talk - just to spend time until the bus arrives.
There was an ashbusstop.org - website, forum and IRC server -, a suicide.bus.stop Yahoo group and IRC channel... maybe there were others too, I just cannot recall every ASH-related or ASH-derived community.
I remember we would wonder why we used synonyms instead of saying "killing oneself" or "taking one's own life". Catching the bus was not the only terminology we used to have.
If someone's death was confirmed, many of us were unable to say it so, we would refer to them as "(s)he's at peace now".
And there were ASHers of different age groups, not only "teen/preteen" division of "us" vs "them"
(Preteens are not even allowed to register on this forum.)
Young people. Young adult people. Adult people in midlife crisis. Mature people too.
(I really don't know what's going on at ASH lately, haven't been there since 2014 or so. The NG is removed from groups.google.com and I am too lazy to set up a newsreader client, heh.)
Certain people should do some research in aim to educate themselves about what a cult is and what the typical characteristics of a cult are.

I prefer to just use words like "suicide" or "killing myself", because I've always kinda hated euphemisms, but I've been using "CTB" because I thought maybe there was a particular reason I wasn't aware of for why people didn't want to use the actual words. If there is no reason, I think I'll go back to using the words I prefer.

Nobody is forcing you to use this expression if you are not comfortable with it! I don't use it all the time either :)

I find suicide difficult to talk about despite planning to kill myself in 3 months, so I like having a euphamism to fall back on.
To be honest, I like the phrase ctb, but that's more because it gives me a sense of plausible deniability. If I accidentally say it in front of someone I shouldn't or if they read over my shoulder, I can make up some bullshit about what it means or plausibly deny that it has anything to do with suicide.
As far as the euphemism aspect, I hadn't really thought of it, but I could definitely see why some dislike or despise it.

You are right. I fucking hate buses immensely. I can't end my life now. Underground? When the New York Times is writing about amazon ordered sodium nitrite, probably not so much anymore. That how I found my way here. Now amazon has banned ordering it, everything is ruint and I don't want to grow old alone. who will kill me?

I only joined a few hours ago but I really like it... I personally think the suicide subject should be more light hearted and not taken so seriously - afterall we all die anyway, what makes it hard is the way our loved ones and society etc view it and believe its some sort of devine right they have to expect us to go on living even though we aren't happy and it just sucks for us. . this is where most of the shame and trauma comes from about actually doing it, let's face it, without those attached stigmas at least half of us would have been long gone already years ago!
