How can it be a strength, though? As an outsider, I don't really see empathy as anything more than a weakness.

It is true that emotional empathy can be a weakness in the sense that it creates a vulnerability within a person which can be exploited; in that sense, you are setting yourself up for potential hurt if anything negative were to happen to your object of attachment. Emotional blackmail is a common tactic.
Cognitive empathy can replicate the beneficial effects of emotional empathy without the underlying sacrifices that comes with it. You do not need to truly care about someone to ask about their day, to consider a situation from their perspective, to help them out, etc... and more often than not, this forges an alliance that convinces them to help you, as well. So, your view is rational.

However, emotional empathy can be a strength. It motivates a person to act and grants them a sense of meaning and purpose, which is an effective cure to existential depression; it fosters strong relationships that are proven to increase the overall health of participants by considerable margins; people in empathically bonded relationships are significantly more likely to be successful than those who are not; it ensures secure and trustworthy social dynamics (emotionally empathetic people will continue to support you even if they would be heavily disadvantaged by doing so); it acts as a source of happiness and an anchor for the aimless.

Empathy is not black and white. It is not perfectly good or innocent like many preach, and it is not completely stupid and vulnerable like others say. It is a trade, one with a lot of risk in some circumstances, for mutually significant reward.
