When you use any vpn service you are giving your data to an unknown party. Some even have ties to government. There have been several large companies buying up vpn services and when you start digging you find some scary things.

Kape technologies owns most of the vpn services now. They were formally crossrider - the adware company. Most antiviruses marked their software as malicious.

They claim they have changed but thats for you to decide. If you simply dont want your isp knowing what youre doing its fine but if youre really trying to hide its getting more difficult.

Having said all that i use expressvpn. I havent had too many issues with it. Sometimes pages are slow to load and i have to change locations but that's about it.

There is also PIA. Both are owned by kape.

Network security is an exponential process. The more secure you try to be the leas user friendly things become

As a side note. Any vpn that truly encrypts traffic will not be free.

I was looking at Proton, but reading this made me worried:

The article says that Proton had to log and give up the IP for an email account. If you continue reading, it does mention that the Swiss court cannot compel them to log IPs within their VPN service -- i.e. there is no logging of IPs within ProtonVPN.

I've been using NordVPN for quite a while and am happy enough with them. Here is a recent Wired article on their recommendations for VPN serivces:

You should read the Trustpilot reviews on Nord. I wouldn't use them.
I use Express VPN - they say they keep no logs whatsoever

I wouldn't recommend protonVPN either. But unless your exposing government corruption or doing some kind of heavy shit tht you can be thrown in Guantanamo for then I don't think you should be overly concerned.

Nord VPN also say they don't keep logs though. They can't be bad but maybe use servers in more privacy friendly countries just to be safe.

VPN Super Unlimited Proxy, free or paid depending on what you need. I use free and if I notice lag at all it's like 2 seconds tops. Been using it for over a year now.

In the VPN market you need to pay for quality. Free providers are under no obligation to not give away your data to third parties. It might even be part of the business model.

My usage of Nord started years ago and came about after studing the charts provided by That One Privacy Guy about 5-7 years back. His website isn't around anymore, but there are still various references to the charts and they can still be found. Given how long ago it was that I chose my VPN provider, it probably would be worth me researching again.

There appears to be questions about how legit the Trustpilot reviews are. Anyone with an email address or a Facebook account can post a review.
I think I'll stick with researching via the various technical outlets.

Mullvad is where it's at; Nord/ExpressVPN're government shills.
