I want to find a place to ctb with charcoal method, but I live in California and a lot of places seem to ban campfires because of fire risk. Am I screwed?

Go to the desert, isn't there a desert relatively close? You'd also be alone there and being disturbed by accident is very unlikely.

CalFire states you can obtain a permit by applying online:

But permit or not, pretty sure it will draw attention.
