I haven't experimented but others have and others also succeeded with just one container. Even if you used 2 containers you would still need some insulation beneath. Heat mats are good, a container with a few inches of water is even better as it will cool enough to not melt the fire retardent material.

I feel one container is best in a tent because using multiple containers means less room for yourself in the tent. Less oxygen getting to coals = more CO production so spreading them might even be a worse idea. Just wait a while for the coals to cool after tipping them out of the chimney and then place the bucket on top of anything with adequate insulating. Couple of bricks, heat mats, container with water, these are all good enough.

Edit: the weather is much cooler where I am now too so not melting the tent is my only concern. Comfort not really an issue now.
Two containers reduces the heat by half in each one, so less of an issue in terms of impact on a particular point. i agree that in a tent two can be a problem. I'm not sure why having two containers of it would reduce the oxygen getting to the coals, it might even be an advantage in that the CO is dispersed more evenly if you had one in the front and one in the back and you're in the middle. It's a good point.

The press never, unsurprisingly, gives details of the particular setup. In one case recently they just said the man in question bought his stuff from a hardware store, so it might have been coals or acids. My priority is just to get the coals at a temperature where they maximize CO but minimise heat output and potential issues that come with it.

Doing this either in tent or car has to be more comfortable when it's cold outside, i'm with you on that.

In a tent then yes, a single pot of coals supported by a pan of water with two bricks in it. the bricks will absorb the water and minimise the heat issue.

I must have misunderstood, I thought you were planning with a tent too. Sorry about that

Edit: two containers increases the oxygen getting to the coals naturally as they will be more spread so more surface area exposed tot he air. With a single high sided bucket the coals will have much less surface area exposed and less airflow throughout. Though it's probably negligible I couldn't say.

yes sorry, i kind of hijacked the thread, i just read a post about co and realised later it was concerning tents not cars. I neglect to think about the logistics of getting to a place with a tent and the set up and with no vehicle. Perhaps you have a car to get there and are going to use a tent anyway. A backpack can hold everything one needs for the tent idea in any case, and perhaps a nicer walk to get there.

I'll be cycling and possibly have to make 2 trips because I plan to make it as comfortable and homely as possible. And no worries I don't think its possible to hijack a megathread :)

cycling to the place sounds very cool indeed, how far will you have to go?

Not far at all, next village up. I might look for somewhere even closer just for the sake of my anxiety though. All I need is a dense patch of trees on public land where I won't expect people at night.

I'm sure you know what you're doing, i wish you courage and thanks for your input, it's been a help. For your anxiety, i remember you saying you can't get benzos but can you get sleeping pills that are non benzo? Try to do something to help you with your anxiety before you begin, even if it's a bach remedy.

Thank you, same to you, hope to end this shit soon
Quite. I edited the post before about your anxiety, try to find some way of dealing with it, even if it's something herbal or a bach remedy. Personally i need something to help me relax about the thing, during the set up, without making me lose the control over the process.

Yes the co output is directly related to the amount of oxygen available as you say, a single place of issue is going to be more toxic, like a single bucket. Placing them on a shallow metal tray would therefore be not recommended. i think i would still go for half a kilo of coals each in two fairly deep metal containers, to disperse the gas well and reduce heat impact. You need to experiment with this method and know that when you get to site, things are as well organised as they can be and you can go through your routine.
