Discussion Are you deeply depressed or suicidal when you are asleep? Poll

[Forever Sleep]

I'm assuming that we are all the same and that our ideation/ depression/ various mental illnesses only affect us when we are awake- conscious and thinking. Still- I was curious to find out...

Personally, while I don't usually have nice dreams, I don't think I have the capacity in sleep to feel deeply unhappy or even suicidal. I definitely feel anxious though. Most of my dreams have anxiety in them. I think I have had one or two dreams about suicide but they don't carry the same feelings/ experience that waking life does.

Sleep is (thankfully) overall- a break for me- although- waking from it is dreadful. It fascinates me though. Where does our consciousness go when we are asleep? I suppose then- it IS our conscious mind that is responsible for ideation.

What are your experiences? What are your main emotions during sleep/ dream? Do they differ greatly from waking life?

I think, my whole consciousness has come to peace with death today.

For the first time, I had a dream that was a fast forward version of my life. Just like people with near death experiences report it. Then everything became bright. I woke up.

I find that my dreams mostly tend to relate to how I'm feeling when I am conscious. It's awful that I can't even enjoy sleep anymore, which means that living is constant torment.

Sure, I've had good dreams - but waking up from a fantasy that I've literally dreamt of, then having to confront you're problems all over again makes me wish I just had a nightmare instead. So at least that way, my suffering is continuous.

The only positive is that sometimes if I'm really lucky, I don't dream at all.

I no longer dream due to my abuse of the devils lettuce but I remember from my childhood rarely ever dreaming of nice things and even when I did, it was more often than not a setup for all of it to go to shit... much like ones life I guess

Most of the time I just forgot my dream, or not dreaming at all.. but if i remembered, it's just kinda random..
If it's nightmare well ofc the emotion is scared. sorry to hear that most of your dreams has anxiety. but then i took med for sleep.
But it (ideation/depression) differ greatly with when i'm awake.

Anyway, this kinda reminded me of a book i read, idk if it's relevant..
"ZhuangZi once dreamed he was a butterfly, flitting and fluttering around, happy, and doing as he pleased. As a butterfly, he did not know he was ZhuangZi. All of a sudden, he awoke and found he was ZhuangZi, solid and unmistakably human. Sleeping is my way to escape reality. But sometimes, i have nightmares about my past. Still, waking up and realize im still here, in this messed up body and mind is far worst than my nightmare.
Easy to sleep but difficult to live.

I've dreamed about suicide but it definitely feels like a dream rather than real life when it happens, although there was one exception that felt far too vivid for comfort and was a bit unsettling

I do smoke weed although it doesn't really do much for me.

When I sleep deep it's the closest feeling to be dead, I hardly have any dreams at least that I do not remember them after waking up, I'm off during these hours.
