Are some goodbye threads just attention?

I'm interested to know how many of you think that this can be the case?
I appreciate that some people want to document their demise but I see so many threads where the OP is back online afterward.
It just worries me that with the negative response through the media this site has gained that continual "this is the end" "goodbye" etc threads that aren't genuine will highlight this further to the media.
I have attempted to end my life numerous times so I am not coming from a place if not knowing how this feels. I am 48 and have had a very fulfilled life and my personal choice is now SN which I will document for others in a PURELY information based thread.

Of course, it's possible that some goodbye threads could be fake.
So statistically, it probably happens sometimes....

Some people may post a goodbye thread, then change their mind and back out, but may feel a bit embarrassed about the situation, and may not post anything for a while.

Some will always be fake for want of a better word, this place is a magnet for the idiots with too much time on their hands.

But that being said, we shouldn't start second guessing or judging these threads, that would just benefit the idiots who want to play games.
Just use your own common sense & if it looks fishy, smells fishy, but claims to be 100% fish free then just ignore it.

I believe there are more who change their minds or fail than there are fakers. In any case I'd rather take goodbye threads at face value. It doesn't cost anything to offer compassion, and I don't know if it does any harm for me to be tricked into typing a few kind words. Anyone faking suicide needs some kind of help anyway.

I think we should take people seriously and respect their state of mind AND right to change their mind.

I think we should take people seriously and respect their state of mind AND right to change their mind.

It's not aimed at anyone in particular so they've no reason to take it personally unless they are faking

Definitely there are fake goodbye treads who claim they will pass away. But there are also many people who say they suffer mentally but hardly had any trauma or depression in life. And confuse having a hard time or winterdip and get frustrated because of lack of money because they watch to much bullshit tv shows about people who spend money.

I can tell you the one I was honored to be with yesterday (and my body is dealing with the shock of it today) was most certainly real... will be writing the tribute today.

I am sorry. I hope you didn't think I meant everyone as I don't. There's just some people that seem to take over the discussion with hard hitting thread titles that are only fishing for attention and I think it diminishes those that are serous.

I'm getting confused about what you're objecting to, but it seems like reporting the threads you suspect of being fake to the mods is your best course of action.

I agree. I was just trying to make the point that the goodbye threads aren't a true reflection of how many CTB. After a bbc documentary recently... services are looking into these sites and I know it's certainly my safe place here so I wouldn't want anything to hinder my being on this site.

I am the first to say that as I am in the same situation but it amazes me that SOME people seem to do it ALOT!

There have been 2 recently I was very suspect about. I think like anything there are some attention seeking goodbye posts where they never intend to actually leave, but I don't think it's the majority, and my default position is to assume they are being sincere. I don't think there's a downside to that really if they turn out to be faking, but falsely accusing someone of faking who is serious at that point seems like a grave error.

The term troll is overused. I don't think they're necessarily just taking the piss but I do think a lot of the time it's a cry for help. I also think a lot of pro lifers are just people that know that. This then frustrates the ones who do mean it

That sounds like you're objecting to goodbye threads being highjacked, or maybe you want a special section of the forum just for goodbye threads. I agree with both those points but they're a different matter than fake goodbye threads.

As I said above if you suspect a goodbye thread of being a fake I think all you can do is report it to the mods.

@WEASEL1234, I'm sincerely baffled as to why you perceive me as trying to "shoot you down in flames" when neither of my posts are at all hostile. I simply don't understand part of what you wrote and hoped for clarification.

Maybe you're using "the thread" for what I call "the main section of the forum". But in any case I'm not shooting you down, demonizing you or accusing you of any ill intent. Peace.
