Only thing I have been interested in terms of true crime is Jeffrey Dahmer cus I empathized and related to him in terms of fear of abandonment and feelings of guilt and found his way and reasoning for killing people as a way to cope with that to be interestingly tragic for him and his victims. I got a weird sense of comfort from him for some reason.

This makes sense to me as a lot of those figures resonate with me. I'm not justifying what they did but so many of them went through a lot of pain as children. They were created by forces beyond their control.

they're still people, that's why. they can still feel the same emotions as others but in varied levels. they have the same moldable brain as everyone else. it's the actions committed that blinds everyone else about them. despite how their actions hurt another, there's still a process, a story that is attached to how they came to be -- and that's very important to consider.

Yes, but I maybe have less sympathy for the perpetraitors. It depends really but generally, more towards the victims probably. I have no desire to commit crime as such. (Not assuming you do necessarily either.) Although, I suppose there is a curiosity on how they ended up doing what they did. I think for me though- it's more about trying to avoid being a potential victim.

I believe I grew up with a narcissist too so, I suppose I feel like there are certain people it's a good idea to give a wide berth to in life- to avoid getting hurt. I suppose when I watch these things- I'm like- that's a red flag. At that point, you probably should have run! It might have saved your life. Even though I am suicidal, I've no wish to let someone else take my life.

I tend to be drawn to industrial disasters too like Chernobyl, the Boeing Max disasters. Also, miscarriages of justice- where people are falsely accused. For me, I think maybe it's just confirmation of my own bias that this world can be really awful!

I suppose I sometimes watch these things to feel better about my life choices. As in, ok I'm single but, that's better than being in a relationship with coercive control, abuse, assault and murder!

I think maybe it's the unsolved cases that get to me the most though. I suppose some will go unsolved forever.

yeah. i don't wish to justify what they did, but i do feel a morbid curiosity about them. i can relate to and empathize with a lot them and what they went through in life before having committed a crime.

I used to watch some true crime stuff, but then I started feeling weird about peoples gruesome murders being used as entertainment.

I was heavily into it but now barely at all. I've had enough to satisfy my curiosity why people do what they do. Now it's just repetitive. The whole "suave cultured serial killer" trope is beyond boring now. I was interested in what makes up the mind of killers and how they were/weren't caught.

Idk about that community much but I met someone although I wouldnt say they were "nice," Im not a hero and all I'll probably commit crimes myself If I dont die sooner, I dont care that much about others and if they die or not, that doesn't bother me because I don't feel it much. I wouldnt cry or feel bothered if someone close to me died, but I dont get the whole fetish around glorifying shooters...the person I talked to was such a fan of some girl who blasted her teacher and classmates with a handgun u probably heard of her not so long ago. I mean I dont agree with what she did but do I care? not really dont know them and wouldnt wanted to, it's just still weird to glorify shooters that much and I may have this view of TCC cuz of this person that Ive talked to.

yes. i've been getting into it a little at a time again recently after abandoning that interest for about a year. it was basically my life from ages 15-21. now it's very nostalgic for me and i have multiple true crime books. i used to run true crime tumblr blogs "back in the day". i don't think there's much inherently wrong with it as long as you don't try to be like them.

Who's your "favorite" serial killer? What shows/ documentaries do you recommend?

Sometimes I'll watch true crime content if it's recommended to me but I can't stand most true crime content creators, let alone the true crime community as a whole. From their tendency to dehumanize others to the ways in which they don't bother to take into consideration the feelings of those who have been impacted by those crimes, treating those life experiences as silly little stories, has completely turned me off that community. I agree with what @Kalista said. I feel like, based on my limited exposure to the true crime community, I don't see enough of this mentality.

I love true crime!

Some can be tragic and some plain awful like for example ted bundy ik people find him attractive for some resson

Or the zodiac killer till now his identy isnt known or that some of his letters to the police jas been declded.

Or John Wayne Gacy that he still denies he was a serial killer and was insitant till his death.

Yeah I used to watch certain YouTubers but you can literally see the disconnect slowly happening while they post more. I try to really only watch people that give more empathy to the victims. The people got hurt critically at the end of the day, didn't want to and that's fucked. And tbh all all probably can relate to the victims too, except we lived and it's (hopefully) not used in vain. You know.
