So I've heard abit about the group and I did have a look on the Facebook page if I am honest. I don't use social media so I just created an account to have a look. The account is not active anymore. I wanted to say say things from both ends of the spectrum really.
From our point of view, we all have a right to choose if we live or die. People have committed suicide since the beginning of time. I don't think this group caused that. If an animal was in pain it would be humane to put it down. If people are in the same boat we should be offered the same understanding. For some of us we literally have no one. So if this group did not exist we would be dieing alone and our lasts thoughts would be "no one even cared about me, I died alone". No one deserves to die like that. Its brutal and cruel. Some people have been through alot of abuse and they can't live with the trauma. Unless someone has walked in someone else's shoes they cannot comment. I grew up mainly in foster care and I was sexually abused, physically abused, emotionally abused and severely neglected by my own biological family. The lost really does go on but each year I'd my life I have suffered extreme trauma constantly. In fact trauma has been the only stable thing in my life.
In their mind they've lost someone who was related to them. I myself lost a parent through suicide when I was a baby so I can say it causes a great deal of pain. Although when I go I won't be leaving any pain behind because I don't have anyone. For them they are extremely hurt because they cannot live with the fact their relative is not coming back. One of the women her name is Cathy she had a son called Joe, I saw the news video. He wrote a note asking for the group to be shut down. So I think Cathy's mission to get the group shut down has alot to do with her grieving and trying to feel close to her son. Her son would have been searching suicide methods in order to find the group anyway and unfortunately not everyone feels they can speak to others about their issues for whatever reason.
What I don't agree with is some of the comments Cathy makes on her Facebook and some of the other people. Yes I understand its painful when someone comitts suicide. That doesn't mean that they have the right to take screenshots of people's messages or even be mean to members of SS. I have seen some of the really nasty names and even a comment "good" when a member died. When someone says a group needs to be taken down because its harmful, they need to question whether their own behaviour is harmful. Calling people names is actually cyber bullying. People end their lives over being bullied. So I don't see the relevance is claiming to be against behaviours that she they exhibit themselves on that Facebook group. I mean we are called sick and other things. It's still emotional abuse, it's aimed at people who are already suffering. I have never told anyone to end their lives. It's easier to blame strangers for someone's actions. The reality is their relatives will have been feeling the way they did before they realised this group even existed and alot of people who end their lives do so without ever finding this group.
I also don't agree with comments encouraging members to message them and everything will stay confidential. I've seen messages where Cathy has threatened to leak a member's messages to her. Shese also tried to get peoples real names and shese not the only one in that Facebook group doing that. Even messages like "thankyou so and so for reaching out to us" we'll your not really confidential then are you? Your just trying to gain acess to information by preying on the fact some people may not have anyone else to speak to. It's manipulative because your not interested in someone's welfare but are interested and only interested in the information you can get from them. It's contradictory to call users of this site horrible names but then offer to help them at the same time. If someone was as vile as some of those messages they put on their Facebook even swearing at people I wouldn't speak to them either if I was in a mental health crisis. I mean people don't speak to stranger online unless they feel like they can't speak to other people. Sometimes people can't divulge things which make them feel suicidal because people don't understand when they're alive. So that's why they confide in strangers. It's very easy to care whether genuinely or just a pretence when someone is dead. The reality is the people felt they couldn't speak to their relatives for whatever reason. So maybe they weren't as close to their relatives as their relatives thought or maybe they didn't feel they'd get the correct support or be listened to properly by their relatives. Suicide is usually a last resort. People don't want to accept that they may have had a part to play in the suicide by not being there or not making the person feel like they could talk about specific issues. They say suicide is not the answer. They don't know people and they don't know people's personal lives. If someone had been severely sexually abused, raised in foster care for just over half of their childhood, been abused to the poimt their childhood was described as horrific. Suffered miscarriages was basically abandoned and was due to go to court to see the person who sexually abused them then I think they'd feel that they had a right not to suffer anymore. No one deserves trauma and agony and if that's all they fear they'll experience then they have a right to say "I don't deserve this horrible life and I'm going to do something about it" alot of people who end their lives actually do try to seek help and they are failed miserably. None of my abusers have even faced justice for their crimes against me. I feel its my right not to live with the consequences if crimes committed against me. I didn't do the crime so I shouldn't do the time simply by living and suffering. People are ignorant. I think realistically people just need to be careful of what they say. More importantly don't share personal details like names, or anything personal. Thr country you love in is fine, maybe not the area or your actual age. As these people seem to be hell bent on exposing people's real identities.
