Are there any other Belgians here that have applied or looked into euthanasia? I am planning to start the application process but struggling to find much information online as to how to go about doing so. Can anyone shed any light as to how to begin? I technically should fit the criteria so I'm not too concerned about that aspect. TIA.

Is this available only for Belgian citizens or anyone with a European passport?

I'm not 100% sure on that. I did hear that there were some 'suicide' tourists coming from France and Germany but can't confirm that. My understanding is that you need a Belgian rijksregisternummer (essentially a social security number) to even begin to apply but, I think anyone from an EU member state can just go to Belgium and register at the town hall for one (don't quote me on that though because I'm not 100% sure).

You should consult with your doctor to determine how to begin the application screening process.

I'm nearly done with my application; 1st time I asked a professional June 2020, then September 2021 I went to Vonkel in Ghent, April 2022 I had my in-take conversation, December 2022 another appointment, the last one was August 2023 and the next one is in July of 2024. It usually takes 2.5 years with maybe an additional 6 months so you're looking at possibly 2027.

Sorry for sounding dense here but my house doctor or my psychiatrist?

Euthanasia is a medical procedure, so yes, your GP. Seems Flemish Cat provided good info. I wish you success throughout this process.

A quick Google spit this out. Gotta love the salacious headline, tho! lol "Doctors kill patients," no wonder euthanasia is met with horrified reactions.

Thanks for your reply.

I actually didn't really think about how long the process would take, honestly 2.5 years seems more than reasonable, survived this long and with an end potentially in sight a little longer seems ok.

Can I ask how you started the process? As in, through your house doctor or? Is everything specifically done in Ghent?

I wish you success with your future appointments though, hoping to be on the same journey soon.

How do they euthanize ? Do they use nitrogen?
