Anti Suicide is opinion based. They stop you from self harming or commiting suicide because it's based on their opinion as "bad" or "wrong", and because they THINK they can help you, whether or not if they can is unknown and depends on you and your choice.

An anti suicide phrase that pissed me off the most is, "I have trauma too and I managed to recover" or "I used to cut myself and be suicidal and I managed to recover, so can you." THAT'S NOT HOW IT FUCKING WORKS. Just because you managed to get over and live with something terrible that happened to you or something awful that you went through doesn't mean everyone else can, external factors such as financial matters and social issues can prevent recovery. Congrats, you survived and now you have a know it all attitude and have been persuaded by society to have an opinion on something that doesn't only affect you.

AND maybe people don't fucking want to recover and keep living with something that screwed them up for life, trauma can be unbearable to live and coexist with and there's only so much you can do before you run out of options, out of meds and coping mechanisms. And if someone's depressed by something deeply ingrained into society and can't be easily changed then WHY force them to live and put up with bullshit they didn't sign up for? Why make them live with mistakes that other people made and force them to deal with or fix them?

The involuntary commitment bullshit is insanely unfair, the system they support by working for causes depression and trauma yet they crucify you for reacting to it or doing things on your own terms instead of minding their fucking business and being aware of the problems they caused and can't and won't fix. Fuck psychiatry and wards.

There's no reason to be forced into one unless you're harming someone else or causing trauma to someone, if it's someone cutting themselves or trying to kill themselves then there's no reason to intervene, they aren't committing a crime, killing yourself isn't a crime, cutting yourself isn't a crime neither. These places made it extremely worse for me. I hope they change these dumbass laws soon.

Beautiful post! As far as I'm concerned, suicide prevention as it currently exists is nothing more than forced life slavery on someone who doesn't want it. I understand wanting to help someone who is suffering and wants to live still, but for someone who doesn't want to live, they need a different kind of help, and to me that would be doctor assisted suicide. Sucks it can't just be legal everywhere so we can easily get a peaceful way out whenever we want it.

100% agree. People have an odd tendency to think suicide and depression are binary, that recovery is always possible and "suicide is never the answer". Sometimes, it just is.
It's even worse when people advocate for stopping suicide, but don't do anything to actually help people who're suffering.
Not to make this political, but it's a similar problem with "pro-lifers", they want a baby to be born, but won't support the mother in any way.

Yeah, there's an inherent bias in suicide prevention whereby people who survive suicide attempts report that they're glad they are alive, and this is often used as support for anti-suicide.
There is no voice for the people who died To say if it was the right or wrong thing. Even for very old people who go through doctor-assisted suicide, they can't report that it was the right move. The only voices for the dead are grief-stricken family members and friends. These people are often unaware of the depth of suffering that a person experienced or that person's honest outlook for the future. It's like a person who is depressed everyday, wants to die, and sees no cause for optimism in their future is doing ok until they ctb and now it's wrong.

another phrase they use is "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" as if they know the person personally and know what its like to live their life. as if every problem is temporary, it's such a ridiculous phrase. Even if the problem*was* temporary, that dosent mean they don't have the right to end their life. Because it's still a solution, and if thats the solution they want to do it's nobody else's business what they do with their life. Funniest thing is that they don't support euthanasia either, which you know, is EXTREMELY strict in its criteria and is basically only accepted when a person has extremely mental or physical suffering that is proven to be incurable. Cuz it puts a flaw in their argument that all suffering is only temporary and can be fixed by going to some wacky therapist and getting medicated, they can't handle the ego hit 😂. A lot of people who are anti suicide pretend to care about people when in the end it's just to feed their own saviour complex and make them feel like they accomplished something.

I recognized this was bullshit the moment it was said to me for the first time in a psych ward when I was 12. I remember saying something like "it's also a permanent solution to every problem I will ever have." And by golly, I was right, because there are so many major problems I wish I could've skipped, and I'm not even 30 yet.

The basic principles behind suicide prevention are simple and twofold: we all die eventually, and death is irreversible. If you choose to live, you have the opportunity to gain maximum meaning and enjoyment out of your life, and you will still die at the end. If you die prematurely, you can't come back and decide to finish up your life. Therefore, as a helping professional, for the *average* person, suicide prevention should remain the goal. And this may include involuntary commitment (although there are so many ethical concerns that come with it).

However, not everyone is "average." And while I think "mental illnesses are brain diseases" has been beneficial in certain ways, it has also popularized the idea that, since these are brain diseases, the person's cognitive faculties are impaired by definition and no major decisions that they may about their lives can be trusted. Suicide, in their minds, can never be a rational act, only the feverish fit of a diseased mind. I think this misconception will have to be the first domino to fall before this discussion makes any progress.
