Has anyone here had any experience with ADHD meds? What's the good, bad and ugly about them?

I've had Ritalin, dexs and concerta since I was about 10yrs old. I think ADHD is a myth and people just need to get chiropractor care, detox and eat properly. I was better off them doing that than on them. They made me a paranoid and I ended up grinding my jaw for well over a decade and had to braces. Created a shit show for me. Do you have ADD?

I don't but my ex-wife wants to put our son on meds. I'm adamantly opposed to it largely bc of what some on this site have gone through. Meds fuck people up more than they help them. I don't want my boy to suffer even if the intentions are good

My 8 year old takes concerta for school hours. He likes that it helps him focus, and he gets corrected less. Without it he couldn't stay in his chair for 5 min since school tends to be too easy for him. The downsides are it eliminates his appetite, and sometimes he will want to skin pick. Stress toys stop the skin picking, but we put him on a low dose that will only be in effect for the 6 hours of school, or he would just never eat.

Adderall, dexadrine and Vyvanse. Though it did help once I found the right recipe for myself, it masked the other more side issues of depression, etc. My anger and commitment to my anger was ridiculous. I essentially lost my emotional side of myself, I was focused, motivated and angry. There was no more love or care that I gave.

It's been 10 months I've been off everything. Took about 5/6 weeks before I started to "feel" again. Unfortunately at week 4 my life fell apart and I lost everything that mattered to me. I look back at the years being medicated and it's like someone else, an asshole, was living my life and I was only able to watch.

I don't discount the medications completely. Had I recognized my depression and repressed emotions and thoughts, and worked on that before or at least while in the meds, I think I could have been okay. Right now I blame the medication for my life falling apart (and myself, mostly myself, I let it happen, I took the medication, I made the choice), I won't ever take them again. On the other hand, I am talking with someone who is looking to start Vyvanse and I think it will be beneficial for him.

Lastly, Adderall and dexadrine was my cocktail for the majority of the time. The high from them gave me the false sense of happiness. Feeling down? I just take a bit more Adderall and the good feelings overrid the other feelings.

AD/HD is definitely NOT a myth, but a factual biological condition, and I am the proof. Here is how I recommend that people who suspect they have that condition test themselves. If they possess authentic biological AD/HD, then an over the counter drug like Benadryl, Tylenol PM, ZzzQuil or any medication containing the antihistamine diphenhydramine as the active ingredient will WAKE THEM UP.

Yes, AD/HD is criminally overdiagnosed in children who act up (typically boys) and criminally underdiagnosed in children who are appear "spacey" and day dreamy, but attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is unquestionably a distinct biological condition where the brain and body paradoxically respond to diphenhydramine, amphetamines and other drugs and medications.

There is no evidence that what is called AD/HD is a biological malfunction however, but a naturally occurring adaptation common to the hunter-gatherer modality which modern living is not accommodating of.

Personally, I wish I had been permanently withdrawn and exempted from all classroom schooling after I was originally diagnosed with what was then called "Hyperkinetic Reaction of Childhood" in DSM-II when I was six years old just after entering first grade. I would have never been drugged with amphetamines like Ritalin and Dexedrine, never had my growth stunted as a result, and never exposed to the public school poisoning of negative labels or toxin of peer pressure or playground and classroom bullying, but having an accurate diagnosis still would have been crucial for medical care reasons like paradoxical responses to certain drugs like diphenhydramine.

Because I know more about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the consequences of the diagnosis than any medical doctor who has ever lived (or is ever likely to live), I have more than once challenged these titled retards ("educated idiots") to test me out by having me take diphenhydramine under controlled conditions before undergoing an overnight sleep study, betting them $500 - $1,000 of my own money that I will not sleep a wink through the entire night, but remain wide awake. No physician has dared attempt contradicting my unsurpassed longevity of expertise on the subject. (I also have severe congenital obstructive sleep apnea, an unrelated condition except for the all important fact that I cannot use the usually recommended Benadryl as an over the counter sleep medication - in fact, the naturally occurring hormone supplement melatonin does not aid my ability to sleep, supposedly "impossible," except for my extensive history of conclusively debunking medical "impossibilities" and "absolutes." Incidentally, "Marches for 'Science' " need to take place to defend the helpless and defenseless field of science because science is not and never can be some sort of new 'infallible' mysticism, since science and scientists frequently SUCK!)

When I was diagnosed at my own initiative years after escaping the classroom, not only was my childhood and adolescent assessment of mental retardation and Down's syndrome completely reversed (it turned out I was actually the only one in my tiny hellhole of a school who had anything above average intelligence, let alone genius), I was found to have a classic case of AD/HD which required alternating daily doses of 150 mg quick release Ritalin, quick release Adderall, and quick release Dexedrine to produce a peak response until permanent tachyphylaxis kicked in about eight months later.

For adults, I do not recommend amphetamines because of the high cardiac risk factors involved. Although I experienced a quantum of improvement in my internal focusing when I had myself titrated from 120 to 150 mg amphetamines, I was also experiencing heart palpitations at that dose. (I did go as high as 200 mg, but no additional improvement in my functioning was experienced, although I did not have any intolerable symptoms of overdose either.)

High dose Strattera never benefited me in any way before the intolerable side effect of "white hot anger" along with flop house sweats and heightened blood pressure emerged.

Since pills are not skills, I begin my recommending that people dealing with ADD read the books on the subject by Thom Hartmann, easily the author with the best mastery and understanding of the condition. I also like Julie Beth Schweitzer, a very nice and diffident lady who makes no pretensions to being an expert in the field, but who did confirm that the portion of the brain which governs visual processes lights up in scans during the performing of mental tasks, as opposed to the "normal" lighting up of the portion of the brain governing auditory processes in usual academically successful subjects. (What Julie did was apparently validate the visual/auditory/kinesthetic theorem inherent in methodologies like neuro-linguistic programming.)

Mnemonics is an excellent compensating mechanism for children struggling in school with the label of AD/HD. I have never known a student with mastery of mnemonics who was not an absolute master of academics. The late Bruno Furst, legendary Harry Lorayne and the currently incarcerated and controversial Kevin Trudeau are the best authors I've read on mnemonics. (Trudeau's a fraudster on many levels, but the 1990's Mega Memory course which made him famous is 100% legitimate and the best program I have ever encountered for two people working together to learn mnemonics. After getting through Mega Memory and Advanced Mega Memory, then one can progress to Harry Lorayne's material more easily on one's own.)

Vissapanana Meditation is the relaxation technique Thom Hartmann applies with himself. My obstructive sleep apnea devastated my attempts to learn it, but if you are not slammed by this double whammy of lethally disabling conditions, then Vissapanana Meditation may be worth learning if you can locate a teacher.

Getting competent support is a major problem. I have two and a half hours of Roger Callahan, the most experienced mental health professional to ever likely live, fall flat on his face in attempting to treat me, and at the end of that session, the recordings make it clear he couldn't get away from me quickly enough.

Nailing down lifelong disability benefits and healthcare on grounds of having AD/HD met with no resistance at all as I was approved without any legal representation of any rejections in a then record 13 months.

Kids with AD/HD are inherently the fastest learners on the planet. The reason we flunk in classrooms is because of how slow and stupid all the straight A students are, as we are forced to a crawl to accommodate how slowly all teaching degrees and straight A students learn.

No student with AD/HD needs more than a single year to easily complete any four year college or university degree with effortless highest honors.

Forcing these kids to sit still is unnatural, and that's why Waldorf and Montessori are vastly superior for AD/HD. We get it the first time then want to move on. Also, unless you can read aloud with extreme entertainment value, then you had better be able to read words at 1,500 words per minute, because that's the pace we want to proceed at.

After I gave up the booze, I ended up going on Vyvanse then adderall as my boss hinted that I was talking too much at meetings.

The adderall made me feel super duper and I'm a control freak as it is. My ego went through the roof and I felt like the master of the universe. I started engaging in risky behaviors for no reason and got in trouble with the law. Then she divorced me. As I look back, the adderall kinda fucked me. It is definitely performance enhancing but when you mix it with 8 red bulls a day, it's just like meth.

I love adderall, red bull and edm music. Good memories but a ruined life.

Personally, if you eliminate gluten, dairy and minimise sugar and get him to a good chiropractor, that will help a lot. Everything's connected and our bodies go through trauma through birth and out spines get out of whack. Stay away from vaccines and antibiotics as much as you can as they unsettle the gut. Your brain and gut are connected so anything happening upstairs, is because of the gut. Kids also need to do parasite cleansing. We do them to our animals but not ourselves and they are a massive cause for unsettled behaviour. Something like this. I have friends kids who have had this and had good results. The whole family should be doing parasite cleanses at least twice a year. You catch them from food, pork is the worst. Ritalin, braces, antibiotics and vaccines is where it all started to go down hill for me so I'd stay away from the system and use natural measures as much as possible. If your kid gets sick, just high dose vitamin C and get some herbs from a naturopath https://nz.iherb.com/pr/HealthForce-Superfoods-Scram-150-VeganCaps/19273
