Agreed. It always annoys the shit out of me when people think they are doing God's work by getting their panties in a twist over a suicide joke. I don't think that they are a big deal and they can be pretty funny sometimes.

It's because in that comparison, you tell the joke in front of them but then have the "decency" to die in private. They don't care unless it's in front of them.

I love a good joke, i think people that aren't familiar with suicidal thoughts/urges often panic when they hear the word. It's still seen as taboo, and I think it makes people uncomfortable especially if they're unfamiliar.

Although I remember making a suicide joke to someone who had been suicidal and it didn't go well at all, I assumed it was okay to joke about but turns out they weren't happy about it.

That said though, I found that people with mental illness have the best humour, I'm not sure why that is. Maybe we become the jester for others, or to put on a facade for a while? Maybe it's just for the shits and giggles.

On topic - typical people won't like it and it's something people need to accept it. I can understand thier point of view.

i used to make suicide jokes as an habit (i also had a "your mom" phase when i got older. it was awful) while also being too young to really process what suicidal thoughts were like. i'm uncomfortable with them now when i know someone privileged is saying that joke, like the way i used to, but i can also see why saying it offhandedly would make people upset anyways. it feels like it's kind of discounting suicide and makes me anxious about if i'm only allowed to talk about suicide as a joke instead of as a real thing, i guess? now that i'm dealing with suicidal ideation as a daily thing, i don't think it's in good taste to joke about even though i still find myself doing it.
