Hello, I want to talk about the less know symptoms of ADHD medication. I personally take methylphenidate 30mg a day.
I want other people to know how to help manage their symptoms so here's a list of mine.
No appetite at all, my stomach growls yet I feel disgusted at the thought of food. It's like trying to eat when you physically cannot anymore like after a buffet. (Help how am I supposed to eat at least one meal a day if it feels impossible to eat? My dr said you have to force yourself but I take one bite and feel disgust)
Random increased heart rate that gives intense anxiety.
Increased arousal (it's very annoying because I will feel extremely depressed yet I'm horny makes me feel bad)
Increased sweating. Omg no one talks about this. I sweat so much even though I'm not hot. My hands and feet are freezing yet they're always slightly sweaty. My armpits and drenched. And the BO is really bad. I have to re-apply deodorant multiple times. (Does anyone have a good deodorant brand? That doesnt run out within an hour. A brand for men and a brand for women)
I just showered last night and I already feel disgusting from all the sweating and I stink. I stink the next day after I shower, it's ridiculous.
More emotional. Whenever I take my medicine, I feel negative emotions much more strongly. I cry over small things. I once sobbed HEAVILY. Because my BF is more attractive than me. And then I was crying because he's handsome. I feel like I cry over things I wouldn't normally cry over.
Constipation/stomach cramps. Omg I cannot shit, I think it's because I'm not eating. But the medicine makes it difficult for you to actually eat. I used to get extreme stomach cramps at school when I took it, I'm not sure if that was also because I was anxious. But I would have to go to the bathroom constantly and shit. Every single day. How do I help constipation? I don't really get stomach cramps anymore but I'm always paranoid I'll have to shit at inconvenient times.
Dry mouth. My mouth is really dry. I have really dry lips too. My dentist said that you can try sugar free gum to help with dry mouth I personally haven't tried it yet.
Not feeling thirsty. I often go all day forgetting to drink water.

Well there's some symptoms of the medication I take. I hope that this post helps anyone who also take ADHD medication. They can look to the comments for advice. And just so you know that you're not the only one experiencing these less talked about symptoms.
Note: Not everyone is going to experience the same symptoms on medication. Everyone is different. I see no one talking about these issues and they can feel rather embarrassing.

I also experienced being more emotional on methylophenidate, like normally my emotions are quite stable but as the medication levels in my body changed, I guess they also messed with my mood. Not really in the same way you described but I would get sudden "spikes" of irritation when something annoyed me (it's not like it was unmanageable, but I was not used to it), also my mood could change quickly (usually to something negative). What helped me was switching to an extended release version, first I went from 20 mg released instantly -> to a pill that releases 10mg instantly, and 10 mg over the next 6 hours -> then to 36 mg released consistently over the next 8-12 hours.
The more consistent the release was, the less I felt the side effects. Now I'm on the last one (36 mg extended release) and taking it pretty much daily and my emotions are just like before the med, I think, that said I'm generally quite stable.

I also get that disgust towards food and oh my, that was a pain at some point. It also improved with switching to extended release but did not disappear. I'm quite used to forcing myself to eat as I often don't feel like it, but this was worse. What also made it harder was the fact that I was at a shit financial situation at the time and had little to no choice on what to eat, also preparing meals required effort as I couldn't afford living off takeout and stuff. So the additional effort required to eat got even worse. Anyway like I said it got better with time and dose changing. But getting food that was easier to prepare/ready to eat helped me deal with it, honestly. I also found that some foods felt less off-putting and I could eat them more easily, like fresh vegetables were quite ok while cooked meat was terrible. Unfortunately people still need to get all of their nutritients and shit- so if you really find it hard to find anything okay, go for calorie-dense foods, I'm definitely not saying you should run on sweets all the time but I ate more nuts, for example, they're relatively healthy and that helped me not to get dangerously underweight- I also ate bigger meals in the evenings when the meds wore off a bit, or in the morning before taking them (I still do it honestly). But these mostly apply if you cook for yourself and can choose what and when you eat, I still have no idea how to handle situations when I'm basically socially forced to eat (like dinner with family when I visit them) when food makes me nauseous.

Other than that I personally didn't notice side effects, but I generally didn't think about it a lot so I might have missed some things or attributed that to different reasons.

So that's my experience, I hope you will be able to deal with these problems.. maybe try a different med formulation if you're able to, because for me it changed a lot. Still the eating part is difficult though.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It helps a lot to hear other people's advice when they've experienced it themselves. I take extended release 30 mg. However I don't think this brand of meds is right for me but I've been taking it for maybe 5+ years? I remember trying out a bunch of different brands and they just make you feel like shit. But I think it's worth trying new meds now. I'm definitely going to talk with my doctor about getting different pills.

People with ADHD are more prone to have hypermobility. For me it's constant backpain, weak painful knees and twisted ankles (at least every year).
Just last month I was told by my doctor, that not everyone gets headache when they cry hard - for some reason it's cos of hypermobility.
Currently I struggle the most with the moments when I'm overstimulated to the point my mind is going crazy. I act "crazy" every single time, and my "get to the social norms" needs and habits stops me from getting out of the situation. It usually ends with feeling like an alien.

okay so I'm on guanfacine slow release 2mg, and I experience a lot of these.
1. no appetite sounds like my experience with anorexia, and if you find yourself struggling to actually consume food, take a lot of vitamins and drink protein shakes if you can afford to.
2. malnutrition makes your heart very very weak and it can cause it to spike easily. I was hospitalized for my heart and blood pressure, I'd lay down and it'd be 50 BPM, id stand and it would rocket to 200bpm. make sure you're well nourished!
3. I don't have increased arousal because I'm also on anti-depressants so it levels out. I also have bullshit erectile dysfunction where I cant orgasm for my life.
4. increased sweating / hyperhydrosis is something I also experience. it is caused by a lot of medications, and I have just learned to thug it out.. sorry lol.
5. increased emotion. I don't experience that but again, I'm on antidepressants so it levels out.
6. constipation is probably from not eating. stomach cramps can be from the same thing, or stress.
7. dry mouth. if you vape, that's likely the cause. as someone who hit their vape 4 times while typing this out, my mouth is dry at all times and its annoying. I get u there twin. 5 time vape now.

tldr: a lot of this ropes back into malnutrition, take vitamins and drink protein shakes or smoothies if you can afford it! if not idk.... we prioritize our diets over our rent in my home because my mom is orthorexic but she refuses to admit it. #poverty #orthorexia #denial #mombuysthefood #ihadsushitoday

I sweat so much after increasing my afternoon mephyphenidate dosage I am considering to switch to twice a day elvanse. I look so unwashed despite showering so often. The horniness part is only sometimes but its the second most irritating side effect for me as someone sex repulsed. I seriously relate to having no appetite and feeling sick. I struggled with hallucinations/paranoia/anger on a higher dosages of elvanse in the past and I feel some of that paranoia more now, especially in public. I also see corner of the eye movements type things from missing just a little sleep or when I'm anxious. It's nowhere near as bad as it was, and I have to keep myself alive for now so its the price I'm willing to pay.

Thank you for sharing! I actually quit taking my medication because I got sick and I'm not sure if it was because of my medication. (I was incredibly nauseous and felt sick) I do not vape or smoke. But life without meds is sooo nice because I can actually eat and I don't sweat as much those are my two main issues. But ofc it comes with a trade off I am a lazy couch potato that doesn't get anything done.

guanfacine causes dry mouth as well. I also take 2 mg slow release
Thank you I was trying to remember what that gum was called.

ADHD medication really sucks. I'm just gonna have to switch around medication until I can finally find one with barely any symptoms. Or I'm going to just try and live unmedicated. (My toxic trait is thinking that if I lock in, I can function normally despite having ADHD) There's so many trades off just to function normally. I feel very embarrassed over the fact I sweat so much on that medication. Do you have any deodorant recommendations?
