For those in recovery, you might want to ignore this since most of these movies have a strong message of suicide, depression, and mental illness.

for the rest of you I linked the original post below. I compiled the list of the recs I think I would enjoy since i didnt want to keep going through the comments. For reference I enjoy action/ mystery movies and melodramas with undertones or direct expressions of suicide and depression. I also strongly dislike scifi/ horror movies.

Any synopsis that is not quoted and cited is my own conclusion extracted from multiple summaries of different websites to make it more concise. I have not watched most of the movies so the summaries might not be completely reliable. Feel free to add your own opinion.

Before I Disappear- "suicidal twenty-something (Christensen) whose attempt to take his own life is interrupted by his estranged sister (Emmy Rossum), who tasks him with getting her precocious daughter (Fatima Ptacek) home safely over the course of one particularly eventful night in NYC"

A Necessary Death- "Gilbert Toma is working on a film for his final thesis. His intentions are to find a person who is not only suicidal, but has also set a date to go through with ending their life. He wants to follow them around, learn about their life, their struggles, right up until the point where they actually commit suicide."

All the Bright Places- "Theodore Finch and Violet Markey are two teenagers who live unhappily in a small Indiana town. Violet is quietly dealing with survivor's guilt after the death of her sister Eleanor and Finch is a loner, called a freak by other students. They meet on the bridge where Eleanor died in a car crash nine months earlier."

Night Mother- "Although she seems normally happy, Jessie Cates casually informs her mother Thelma that she is going to commit suicide during the night. This initiates a war of nerves between the resolute Jessie and the heart-broken Thelma who uses every gambit she can imagine to save her daughter."

Blue Spring- "Soon after being named the new leader of his high school's gang system, Kujo grows bored with the violence and hatred that surround him. He wants desperately to abandon his post… but his once-enviable position of power has a strange way of making him feel powerless."

Wristcutters: "A Love Story- Zia, distraught over breaking up with his girlfriend, decides to end it all. Unfortunately, he discovers there is no real ending, only a run-down afterlife that is strikingly similar to his old one, just a bit worse. Discovering that his ex-girlfriend has also "offed" herself, he sets out on a road trip, with his Russian rocker friend, to find her. Their journey takes them through an absurd purgatory where they discover that being dead doesn't mean you have to stop livin'."

"A film set in a strange afterlife way station that has been reserved for people who have committed suicide."

Rules of Attraction- (I dont think its abt suicide more of a twisted take on troubled teenage life in college.)
"The incredibly spoiled and overprivileged students of Camden College are a backdrop for an unusual love triangle between a drug dealer, a virgin and a bisexual classmate."

The Bridge 2006 documentary- (A secretly installed camera follows suicide attempts at the Golden Gate Bridge; unbeknown to 23 protagonists. It follows the course of a rare recovery and the grieving process of the deceased's friends and family.)

Better Off Dead- (unserious comedy romance)
"High school student Lane Myer, who becomes suicidal after his girlfriend breaks up with him shortly before Christmas."

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest- "In the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse."

Chatroom- ( William a depressed teen, lures 4 other depressed teens into a chatroom, encouraging bad behaviour and manipulating them into committing suicide among other twisted commands. When they falter he attempts to forcibly make them commit suicide.)

Virgin Suicides- "The film follows the lives of five adolescent sisters in an upper-middle-class suburb of Detroit during 1975. After the youngest sister makes a suicide attempt, all of the girls are put under close scrutiny by their religious and overprotective parents. The girls are eventually withdrawn from school and confined to their home, which leads to the increasingly depressive and isolated behavior" (told from the perspective of teen boys in the neighborhood who are fascinated by the girls.)

Harold and Maude- (Harold, a depressed, death obesessed, trust fund baby, spends his free time attending funerals and pretending to commit suicide. At one of the funerals he meets Maude a 79 yr old with similar life philosophy who approaches life in a contrasting manner of happiness and love.) "Harold's mom meanwhile wants him to marry well. He sabotage's his mother's attempts to set him up with a potential wife, and soon announces to her and friends that he is going to marry Maude. "

Boy Interrupted- (A documentary following the life of 15 yr old Evan who lived with Bipolar for much of his life. He started expressing suicidal ideation at the age of 4 and continued to live a tortured existence constantly overshadowed by multiple suicide attempts and mental illness. The story is told by his family and friends who relate the antics and episodes of his short life through videos and personal narrative.)

The Sunset Limited( A melodrama with an awfully sad ending.)
"The film is about the relationship between a Christian Black man, who has a positive view of life and a nihilistic White man with a very negative view" (of life). ( Although Black attempts to dissaude White taking his life he does not succeed in the end. He is left wondering why God put him in this position and questions his faith.)

Fight Club- ( The unamed narrator meets a character, Tyler, at the lowest point in his life. Tyler who brings out the innate feral nature of men forms an unregulated fight club with the narrator where they commit crimes and destroy everything in their paths. Tylers conflicting character is slowly exposed and disssected by the narrator and other club members. This eventually leads to the narrator to spiral out of control when he realizes Tyler is not who he thought he was.( I dont think Im explaining it well, if someone could help me out. Any summaries I found online were to lengthy and total spoilers.))
The movie is so chaotic. Fun and insane plot twists.

The Deer Hunter- "It is a progression from a wedding to a funeral. It is the story of a group of friends. It is the record of how the war in Vietnam entered several lives and altered them terribly forever.

Sophies Choice- "A Holocaust survivor is haunted by the decision she had to make to give up one of her children to death." ( It is a complicated plot that involves domestic abuse, cheating, overwhelming guilt and partner suicide.)

Poetry 2010- "A sixty-something woman, faced with the discovery of a heinous family crime and in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, finds strength and purpose when she enrolls in a poetry class."

Perks of Being a Wallflower- " this is about 15-year-old Charlie, an endearing and naive outsider, coping with first love, the suicide of his best friend, and his own mental illness while struggling to find a group of people with whom he belongs. The introvert freshman is taken under the wings of two seniors, Sam and Patrick, who welcome him to the real world."

The Hours- " The story of how the novel "Mrs. Dalloway" affects three generations of women, all of whom, in one way or another, have had to deal with suicide in their lives."

The Last Family- (described as a black comedy) " Based on the true story of surrealist painter Zdzisław Beksiński and his eccentric family, we meet a group of big personalities, including his neurotic son, Tomasz, whose violent outbursts and suicidal tendencies constantly occupy Beksiński and his wife Zofia in this decade-spanning family saga."

Suicide Club- (This is an exception horror film that I thought might be interesting) " In Tokyo, 54 schoolgirls leap in front of a subway train committing suicide. Shortly after, at a hospital, two nurses kill themselves by jumping out of a window. At both locations rolls of flesh are found, with the missing skin matching removed flesh on corpses. Three detectives are notified by a hacker named Kiyoko of a link between the suicides and a website that ties the mystery to an internet suicide cult around a guy named "Genesis". Within the next days, the suicide epidemic spreads over Japan and many more deaths occur. Will the police be able stop this mysterious epidemic?

Gus Van Sants Last Days- (The movie follows a singer, Blake, who is in the end stages of drug addiction barely concious of his environment. He is detached from reality completely uninterested his surroundings. Similarily the movie is depicted in a vague, distant manner to convey the melancholy of his situation.)
Gus Van Sants has created two other movies that simply follow the cycle of life and death without creating an internalized meaning.
The movie is a tribute to the singer Kurt Cobain a former band member of Nirvana. According to sources it is loosely based on his death.

What Dreams May Come True- " After Chris Nielsen dies in a car accident, he is guided through the afterlife by his spirit guide, Albert. His new world is beautiful and can be whatever Chris imagines. Even his children are there. But, when his wife, Annie, commits suicide and is sent to hell, Chris ignores Albert's warnings and journeys there to save her. Upon arrival, Chris finds that rescuing Annie will be more difficult than he'd imagined."

Veronica Decides to Die- "Depressed by the emptiness of her life, 20-something Veronika attempts to commit suicide, but survives. Waking up in a mental hospital, Veronika learns that her attempt has fatally damaged her heart, leaving her with weeks to live. Initially determined to kill herself rather than wait for death, Veronika's will to live is rekindled by Edward, a handsome fellow patient."

( I think the next quote better describes the conditions under which Veronica met Edward and started to recover.)
" In the hospital she meets people who are only 'insane' because they don't always follow society's rules. With little left to lose, Veronika frees herself to experience relationships and emotions and ultimately discovers what it means to live."

Suicide Shop- (A supply shop that exsists solely to assist other with suicide is run by a family with 2 apathetic children. Business is flourishing until a new baby, Alan, comes along who slowly ruins the mood with his happy personality as he grows up. It follows the initial hatred the others harbor towards Allen, their eventual acceptance and attitude change.)

The Seventh Continent(1989)- (The movie follows the life of a average middle class family who over time gets fed up with the routine and absurdity of life and destroy everything. The husband leaves a note for his parents with misleading clues that prompts an investigation questioning the events that occured.)
