It's apparently a base substance for hydrazoic acid, and turns into hydrozoic acid when coming into contact with water. The mechanism with which it kills isn't completely understood, but in large doses it causes hypotension, bradycardia, unconsciousness, and eventually death. It essentially causes such a disruption in the cellular cycle that your cells are no longer able to function and begin to die. The symptoms can be very similar to cyanide poisoning. Apparently the average length between ingestion and death is 4.5 hours, though I'm not sure what the time between ingestion and unconsciousness is. The success rate in suicide attempts with this is 92%, however this statistic doesn't include what if any other substances or methods were commonly taken in conjunction. It has no antidote. It does cause cellular death, however, so survival in the case of a failed attempt has a good chance of causing organ damage, especially to the heart and brain. There is no antidote or treatment other than supportive therapy and time to see if you'll live or not, so if you take it and regret it or it's painful and unpleasant there is nothing they can do to reverse it.

Further info after reading even deeper: in the instances of suicides it is recommended to take painkillers, anti nausea meds, and "sleeping or anxiety" meds which I assume means benzos. It is claimed by some to be a peaceful and human CTB method, however there is not enough information to prove or disprove this.

I have read about this too. I don't know that individuals' background but I'm having a hard time believing there was no better place and time to do this than in a school, endangering other students and potentially giving them trauma. Actions like this are counterproductive to what we all want on this site, which is the decision to end ones life being regarded as legitimate and a part of everyone's right to their own life.
