So today I looked at some TEFL courses because I want to enroll in one soon. However, the only one that is affordable for me appears to be a scam, but I couldn't find much information about it on the internet and the reviews seem sketchy (I checked reviews on other sites). I can't afford any other course as they're expensive af. Nice. There goes the last hope I had career wise. Fuck this shit.

That sounds stressful. It can be a dreadful feeling when things keep on going wrong, but that is the way life is, if there is any hope it never seems to last. Whatever happens, I wish you the best.

Why don't you go to free self-study courses? I find the free material is more genuine and helpful than the paid one.
There is always a way, don't give up, you can do it! Wish you the best!

the problem with free courses is that if they are indeed legit, you can't do much with whatever you obtain after. In order to teach english abroad (what I want to do) you need this certificate because it lets you get recognized with this. And in order to get the certificate you need to pay for a course. And the course obviously has to be accredited too. The one I wanted to take was 102 dollars which I could afford, but I heard that legit ones start from 150 dollars plus, which I can't. Awful how money dictate everything in this bullshit world.

I understand, I think the payment is for the exam itself. The exam costs 100 usd + (not sure the exact amount, it depends on your place). You can study from free course, once u feel ready, you buy the exam and go for it.

Here is the link for legit fees:

Hi :) I took the test a while back and if you only need a course for preparation, check out YouTube! They have loads of videos to take tests as if you were in an exam and you will only have to pay the exam fee. A channel that helped me is called tst prep Toefl.

would this be recognized in order to teach English abroad? I don't know, I've been told about this path some time ago by a person who isn't here anymore so I can't ask anymore.

yeah what matters is you do the exam and pass it. the way u pick to prepare for the exam doesn't matter, you can choose the courses you want to study.

interesting cause I think that most known TEFL courses don't even have an exam at the end.

i just realized we are talking about two different tests … I think Toefl is mostly for non-English speakers that want to go to an English university. So this is probably not the right one for you, sorry for the misunderstanding…

aww I'm really sorry, I also thought you were talking about a different exam. You're looking for this https://www.tefl.org/courses/
Sorry, I don't know much about it. Wish you all the best :)

I used to be an ESL instructor before I got sick. I have a master's in education with a specialization in TEFL. Most TEFL or TESOL courses require 120 class hours plus an in person practicum. I've taught in the US, China, and South Korea and have done teacher training and recruitment. You can message me any time. Not sure if I can help but I'd be happy to try.
