Apologies but this post avoids all gendered terms except niece and nephew, which makes a confusing setup make even less sense to you. Sorry.
"Your niece and nephew need you" is not something I expected to hear before I left.
Their parent, my sibling, will likely hurt more and hurt more performatively and more permanently than at least two of my three parents.
I'm going to play games with something else my sibling said today: "your niece will be in [Concorde's town] on a school trip this year" but I'm not allowed to see her then. (!) I can see her when she comes here on a separate trip. (?!)
My sibling said the same thing when my niece's other parent, with the niece, were in the same town as my parents: no visiting them if my sibling wasn't there.
So in order to spare myself some guilt, my takeaway will be that the niece and nephew kinda need me but will be fine if they don't see me.
