Heard today a young man from my home town, outgoing sportsman, 21 years old, at university has killed himself. Couldn't carry on any more.

There's no point trying to save old people in one hand from covid, if you're losing more through suicide and missed health appointments from the other. I know 3 people who have died from cancer in the last 12 months, they culdn't even get a doctors appointment, never mind treatment.

Need a serious rethink to the approach, and politicians have a lot to answer for.

Covid is a much more of a political hot potato. Many governments are being critisized for "not doing enough" even when they're shutting down their whole countries in the name of Covid-fighting. Everything else sort of fades into the background.

Yes I agree(to an extent)...
What's the point in constant lockdowns to protect certain groups of vulnerable people if it's at the expense of other groups of vulnerable people
I say to a certain extent because I still strongly believe everyone should do their bit to help such as wearing masks, diligent hand washing, sanitizing etc.

What would have been rational to do would have been one , strong and hard initial lockdown. Most countries botched this . As a result we now suffer and they will play pretend with rolling lockdowns

That would've only worked if the entirety of the world magically forgot their profound differences and somehow managed to coordinate a month-long worldwide lockdown.

the reality is that this virus is resistant to these measures, many countries have tried really long and shitty loldowns that only served to impoverished the middle and lower class even further. And now there's evidence that not only those didn't work, they actually may have caused a larger contagion since they were implemented by concentrating the entire population into the same timeframes or places when they needed to go out for basic supplies.

Right now it's abundantly clear that lockdowns don't work on the west, there is no justification to them but some politicians will never accept that they fucked up badly with this shit.

World wide lockdown wasn't needed. But yes you identified the problem: they just won't work in most western countries. The western countries have a lot of machismo and they see a lot of common sense things as being effeminate. The small penis people screwed it up for everyone in those countries .

many asian countries with high density cities did a much better job than the west.

No one did a good job of anything, it isn't going to go away it's here forever, so we need to learn to live with it. There is something sinister going on under the surface, in the UK the insane twatflapper Hancock suggested everyone who tests positive should get £500 - that will simply encourage everyone to get tested, and some numpties to get infected for the money.

I know one pilot who has lost his job, an employee at a train company who say passenger numbers are down 70% and massive redundancies are coming, there are coach companies who have shut down because no one is going anywhere, and if they are, with social distancing it's not economically viable to run the coaches or busses, and in that vein Ryanair normally this time of year are doing 2000+ flights per day and are currently doing between 10 and 20 - how can they even pay their electric bill from that, never mind the staff, building costs, phone lines, etc, the world is going to hell in a handbasket, and it's all avoidable - but they do it anyway.

They aren't idiots, they have more data than we do, so clearly it's deliberate.

Bill Gates is buying up private airlines and private jets - why do you think that is? You will never get on a plane or visit another country again, just like in the past - the amazing life we have had is over for good, we will now enter a period of food and energy rationing and industrialisation on a basis where most people are simply not needed.

You're objectively wrong that no one did a good job. Multiple Asian countries more or less knocked it out with stellar management. Taiwan and vietnam are the best examples. These countries you would have expected hundreds of thousands dead due to population density and underserved elderly populations but that did not happen in reality .

the western countries totally blew it and many of their citizens are angry about it and some in denial of reality. This is what you get for training a culture to watch football and electing reality televisions stars - I'm sorry but that is the truth.

and nice conspiracy theory about travel. Borders have been opened and closed many times during the pandemic, with the airlines begging people to fly. I receive free flight credits in the inbox all the time. Multiple countries even bailed out their aviation sectors for continued use as the pandemic subsides - so tell me how your theory fits that reality ?

Can we stop blaming every single bad thing ever on male behavior? it's far more complicated than that reductionist way of thinking.

at the end of the day, every culture is different, even if east-asian cultures survived this pandemic due to their governments and culture, lets not even pretend that they are perfect.

They aren't perfect , but they aren't addicted to football and defunding education. And yes - I won't stop criticizing machismo. Real men don't kill their families and call wearing a mask a homosexual act.

I m objectively not wrong at all. You can secure 1 country all you like, but it s out there and always will be, it cannot be removed from the natural pool of diseases. So as soon as you unlock, unless you want to be isolated forever, it will simply be re-introduced from somewhere else and off you go with it. You don't have a magic covid filter, and as soon s it's in birds and other migratory animals you've got it whether you lock down or not.

What are you rattling on about you loon? Who the hell equates wearing a mask to homosexuality? It sounds like you're a man, and you're projecting, or you're a mad feminazi - not a feminist, but a man hater, a misanthrope.

Magic covid filter would be called a vaccine - which is being distributed as we speak in many countries. Current science points to the fact that the vaccine can be rapidly updated in case of mutations that would limit its use.

this is a technique that has been in use for hundreds of years

Remember early on the pandemic when everyone was laughing at karens for refusing to wear a mask? it's not just a male issue, in fact, seeing it as purely one just shows how reductionist your views are on complex topics.

And if you really think that western culture is just watching football and defunding public causes then I don't even know what to tell you.

Besides, you are perpetrating your own views on what you perceive as a ""real"" man.

It's not a vaccine by medical definition, it's a medicament. And they don't work. We've never made a safe coronavirus vaccine because of how the disease and animal biology works, every attempt has ended with all of the test subjects dying - but don't let that get in the way of your stupidity.

The "vaccine" doesn't stop you contracting it, or spreading it, it supposedly just lowers the symptoms.

Check out Professor Ian Fraser - he, unlike you, knows what he's talking about.

Karens can be guilty of machismo too.

it's an objective fact the East Asian countries handled the pandemic better than the west. I don't trust Chinese statistics but I was in free Asia for the pandemic , the pandemic there was basically nothing.

Western covid response was a joke. Fortunately now one key country in the west has got better leadership on the issue

What you're alluding to is super dumb. Contrarian for the sake of it. Not the least bit pragmatic. Full of arrogance. Get the F off that fake pedestal.

I just watched this guy give an interview. You're embellishing to the max. From his mouth i just heard "1 in 100 test subjects may get sicker" which is a galaxy away from every organism the vaccine has been tested on died. That interview was months ago. We've progressed since. Yes this is a unique virus.

There is no magic vaccine as alluded to by the other user. The product we do have is exponentially better than whatever the hell you're talking about. Data backs this up. There are few good reasons to argue against the vaccine which the medical community and ian Fraser have chosen to call it during common conversation. This is no more than a semantic laden argument that serves little purpose.

You're a fool. I can't be bothered to go through the science, you simply won't understand it or will choose not to.

The idea that in less than 6 months we've advanced knowledge and ability to a point beyond the decades and decades of previous failures - well, please go and get jabbed and then contract the virus.

I'd say come back and tell us how that went, but you won't be able to, you'll be dead.

In any case I started this thread about a young man who took his life, not as a soap box for a bunch of numpties to spout their scientifically illiterate nonsense on.

That's nice, personal attack without addressing the content then change subject. Usually says something, like you don't understand the science. Please go back to that bio II textbook and try not to be such a jerk to people around here. If you have something substantive to contribute and back up your claims, which ya don't, do it instead of attacking internet people you don't know... While citing an expert who stated something very different than you portrayed in this thread. I watched the guys video bc was wondering "who is this nut" based on what you said. However it turns out you're misrepresenting his point of view by a lot.

Frankly you related suicide to policy based on science while mumbling falsehoods. When an understanding of science should lead you to a different conclusion at this point in time like it does for practicing doctors. Or why the vaccine is similar to aids treatment. Or the risk/reward to creating immune system recognition. That's because evidence stated the vaccine is helpful and better than nothing. Not perfect just like a flu shot. Better than sitting on our butt.

All you critiqued is the historic treatment method for viruses due to their mechanism which has been an improvement vs. not taking vaccines throughout history. That is what the policy is built from. Data indicates the same right now. Of course we won't know specifics until time passes and can learn more about results. The 1 detail you cited as if you were an expert is completely misrepresented. That shouldn't be spread. If I'm wrong please teach me. Sourcing would help. Let me guess, there's no point right? Also, I know the isolating impact of this quite well and it's impact on mental health is not foreign.
