Discussion Would you give a loaded gun to a depressed/unstable person???

In 2019 I was not thinking clearly, I was depressed and my mind was not clear from being affected by the side effects of prokinetics, I had suicidal thoughts and had a breakup with my then best friend, I asked her to give me back a gun I had given to her and knowing I was depressed she gave it back loaded, chaos ensued, it went off on me and I destroyed my ears I'm disabled now. Would you have given back the gun to a depressed/unstable individual????

now if they had priority access to certain federal government locations in an era that ran from 2017 to a few days ago, that might change the calculus ;)

It's the same question as "would you forcibly take away a depressed/unstable person's suicide method?" Yeah, most would. Except on this site. The fine print of embracing suicide a freedom you have, is that you also take the responsibility of things going wrong. Even if you were in a really bad shape and the risk of things going wrong were really high. If you expect other people to interfere with your choices "for your own good", then you don't really want the freedom. Either you want the freedom, or you want the interventionism. You can't have it both ways.

There are two sides to every story, I'd like to hear your friend's side of it as well. As you said yourself, your brain was not clear.

But what about with this method - they can use the firearm potentially against others. You could make the same argument about Some suicide drugs but the way of delivery by an attacker is very difficult.

I assume this opinion will be unpopular but I think the risk of harm to others is beside the point. It's the same as the train method we were talking about in another thread. Yes, third parties are at risk, as they will be using just about any method, though different methods carry different risks. The collateral damage is something you have to accept if you're set on murdering yourself. Otherwise you're stuck.

The average person, if trying to kill themselves, will make sure they are alone. The only methods that could involve distress/harm to others are death by train or jumping from a height. If someone wanted to shoot themselves, they would make sure nobody else was around.

Because, well first of all it was my dead father's so I didn't know how to use it and one day I just grabbed it and started handling it and it went off and destroyed my ears causing me tinnitus and hiperacusis, I'm disabled now because of that incident. She knew I was depressed and gave it back loaded anyway not caring about the posible consequences, meaning not caring if I killed myself or hurt myself badly. I didn't really knew what I was doing then.

She was a narcissist so she has no conscience, I think that's why she didn't care at all. Normal ppl wouldn't do it.
Still I feel so guilty and stupid :( can't forgive myself for ruining my life.

Were the accidental discharge and her returning the gun separate incidents? Because it sounds from your first post that she you gave you the gun back, you flipped out, and accidentally fired it, destroying your ears. But now it sounds like that happened before you gave her the gun. What was the chaos that ensued?

Are you familiar with hyperacusis caused by acoustic trauma????? People can get tinnitus and hyperacusis from any loud bang from a Remington revolver like mine to a firecracker.. even a loud concert. Look things up before saying something isn't true.

Hahah you are right about something I was too vague, I tell the whole story in another post "The Gun Incident", she gave it back I put it in the closet and a couple of weeks after I took it out started handling it and it went off. Sorry for not being specific about the timing. But do go search "hyperacusis" and "acoustic trauma", people are getting it now from using headphones all the time! Not too many ppl. The incident also happened indoors so the sound got the chance to bounce.

Are you german friend?? I studied languages before this and was just starting German. Had to quit, it's impossible to learn a language when sounds hurt and you have to avoid all sounds coming from electronic devices.

You were so lucky! People can get tinnitus, hyperacusis and hearing loss from firing weapons without ear protection. Some pple can fire tons of shots and not get T and H but the only way to know is when u get it. So, better safe than sorry! I'd never had a gun in my hands before this, didn't know how to shoot, it was a very old Remington revolver.
