As for "fast & painless" - from what i found so far:
-gun. no contest here. definitely fastest and most painless if done properly
-inert gas asphyxiation. you basically go to sleep to never wake up. requires some preparations
-aforementioned SA (sodium nitrite) poisoning. might give you some headache, nausea or cause vomiting but still is considered one of the most peaceful ways to go
-partial hanging or night night method. if done properly, you only block arteries, not the airways so basically you slowly go to sleep due to oxygen deprivation to the brain.

No method is going to be easy and that's what people need to understand. The human body was not meant to intentionally end its life, so it is entirely reasonable that each method includes some form of discomfort. The best you can do is pick a method which a) has a high chance of lethality, b) a low chance of failure / becoming a vegetable, and c) minimal direct pain from the method itself.

Poisons or gases are usually the common chosen options because of that. People pick others out of accessibility and urgency, usually, although all methods are right for the right person.
