To send final texts?

I've been watching a documentary where they ping people's phones, or put alerts on them, but presumably they can't do that with a phone you haven't told anyone about?

They can track location on any phone. If they do not know what phone you are using, they do not know where you are.

I imagine you'd have to buy a phone without a GPS receiver, or remove it by dismantling the device. Also, I don't have advanced knowledge on these things, but your rough location can be estimated by your cellular provider because phones get signal from nearby cell towers. So getting a phone with no GPS wouldn't exactly solve the issue.
You could send texts from a different location, dispose of the phone and move to your preferred place of CTB, assuming that's what you want to do directly before CTB.
It generally doesn't matter what phone you use. As long as you have signal and text them, there'll be a way for them to figure out your rough location (they'd have to alert the police to access your cellular provider's logs). It depends on your method, but I believe they wouldn't be able to find you in time.

If you're that concerned about it, buy the burner phone out of your local area. That way it is less likely that they would find store surveillance that would show you buying the phone (at a precise time) and then connect your buying the phone with the specific activation of the phone. Use delayed-send email and texts.

You can buy a burner phone and a prepaid phone card. Pay cash for both. That way there will be no name on the account when you activate it. It would be better if you sent a delayed text. If someone calls the police after you text them, they will contact the service provider and ask them where the text was sent from. The service provider can triangulate your location from the cell towers fairly accurately even if you turn off the GPS.
