There have been a few posts that show SN to be very painful or unreliable. One post said people suffer convulsions for 40 hours?? I'm worried since I'm really counting on SN as my preferred ctb method. The prospect of hanging or jumping terrify me. Are these posts true or just fearmongering by pro-lifers?

They are all fearmongering posts, it's best to just take no notice, there's often been someone on here trying to scare people about SN. To me SN doesn't even sound that horrible, maybe just a bit unpleasant, the method is a reliable poison after all and I think that those who have access to it are fortunate.

Some SN cases are painful, some cases are discomforting, some cases are peaceful. Everybody reacts different.

You can make your own conclusion about SN by reading documented cases.
Here you can find description of painful cases and here compilation of peaceful and discomforting cases and symptoms.

Seems to be taken from that Dutch book or article about SN so I'd blame the author of that more than people here quoting from it (although they could very likely have ulterior motives as well) I'm not too worried about it. If you were still alive after a few hours I'm sure you could just call for help and get the methylene blue antidote (sorry if I spelt it wrong) couldn't you? Unless you were completely incapacitated ofc which I suppose is possible but seems unlikely the 40 hours thing is accurate or likely in any case.

Which do you think is less painful? SN or a shotgun to head in the right place?

In order to know if it's painful or not, you just have to understand how it works:

TLDR it limits oxygen transport and delivery in the body through the formation of methemoglobin.
You'd start dying with hypoxia because there will be a decrease in oxygen supply to organ tissues with some oxygen still being received, until there is no oxygen anymore and then die from anoxia.
Loss of consciousness is supposed to occur fast enough to barely feel discomfort anyway. You'd probably have time to feel the heart pumping, then pass out, and see the light.

It's not as fast as inert gas, where you'd blackout in a few breaths, but it looks like a peaceful way to go.

Here's a thread where someone wanted to try a small dose and described how it went (with 1,5G):
Needless to remind not to try that; it's poison, so don't fuck with it. Also, the regular dose to CTB being 16 times that, things would probably go faster and/or stronger on d-day.

If your dose is proper you really won't be in much discomfort at all if any.
