It feels like what's happening in the world is all too horrible to be real

I read story after story about the horrific things happening and I just can't bear it

I feel so pathetic and cowardly
There are people fighting to save others
Humanitarian workers risking their lives

And I'm just here crying and doing barely anything of any use

Why is humanity so horrible? Why do we feel the need to hurt one another so much

That's why I stopped watching the news.

Only skimming through news items is enough to make me feel miserable

It is horrible how humans treat other humans, so much suffering and death. For better and for worse, we are more easily informed now than ever. Became hard for me at times to separate what was happening out there, with what is happening to me and within me. One thing to remember, there are good people in the world, like those humanitarian aid workers you mentioned. There are many good people around.

In someways, just knowing what is happening is bearing witness, and i think that has meaning even if we can't actively help. But it's good to be able to put it away and try to focus on what is most in our control, what is most in front of us. You also need attention and deserve love.

Not watching the news doesn't change what's going on. You're still going to know what's happening in your psyche and being. It's been happening since humans first came into existence. Our eyes have been opened a little more wider now thanks to improvements in communication. Unfortunately, the atrocities in the world will continue long after we're gone and until humankind is no more. There's just no fix for what ails the human heart.

I agree. It leads me to imagine that the "grass is greener" on other sides of the world but after so long my dreaming comes to a crash when I learn that whatever place I fantasize about being "so much better" (or even just decently better) is actually crappy in its own special way. It's like there is nowhere to go or run.

Agreed, there is nothing worse for your mental state than to be bombarded and overwhelmed with horrific information. Years ago (especially during COVID times) I could not stop looking at "doomer" news especially regarding climate change, collapse, etc, and it was pure poison for my brain. Sometimes, being in the dark about horrible things is good for you, especially when we lack any sort of control over them.

I have a friend who is constantly looking at graphic war footage, even though they do not have any sort of personal involvement in the matter like connection to the countries involved or any family or friends living there, I seriously do not think it is good for them due to the frequency with which they are consuming extremely disturbing things. The internet means we have a steady stream of access to information, and some of this information your mind is better off simply not knowing.

There is infinite tragedy happening in the world at any given time, and if you're already struggling with your own problems, being exposed to such content frequently I think adds to any existing pain. Especially when you feel helpless to change things, as the common person has no ability to stop the sickness, famine, wars, violence, and misery happening in other countries.

If you can avoid heavy news consumption, it is way better for your peace of mind I think. I certainly became a bit less miserable when I curated my online experience to have less doomsday and collapse content.

When pulling off the justification of acts of oppression due to religion, culture, nationalism, etc. it's simply because we are aggressive animals. Apes, otters, ants, and thousands of other species are in a state of perpetual killing of one another. We have developed brains that led to morality that led to questioning all of it, but we are still deeply ingrained in the animalistic nature of domination. Nowadays it bothers me far less than when I was younger since I've come to realize I am not overwhelmed with emotion over knowing every wild cat is killing birds and mice, wolves kill deer, on and on with millions of animals. That's nature's state of being. I do the only thing I can, which is make sure I'm not part of that cycle and try to help others.
