Basically: if you win a competition you are more likely to continue winning. If you lose a competition you are more likely to lose the next until you develop an anxious or submissive personality. This pattern is seen almost ubiquitously among all the animal kingdoms so it obviously applies to humans as well. The thing is that humans aren't as black and white when it comes to who is a loser and who is a winner

Even though I am competitive at heart, I lost the game that is life.

And I am a really bad loser. If I cannot win, then I don't want anything.

It's really all or nothing for me.

That's why I am suicidal lol

Not only our own perceptions, people's perceptions and judgements affect this too.
For example, you lose a really important match and your coach leaves you; it gets harder to get another one. It's a very bad analogy, but just to say that other people also have an effect.
